05/13/2026

On Thursday May 14th, the Bristol Water and Sewer Department will be continuing a sewer main upgrade along Gridley Street using a trenchless method called “Slip Lining.” The original clay sewer main, installed in the early 1900s, had started to crack and was in need of repair. Normally, replacing it would mean tearing up the whole road, months of work, and costs topping a million dollars.
With Slip Lining, a new Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP) made of flexible, resin-soaked felt is inserted into the old clay pipe, then hardened with steam to form a seamless, rigid liner that bonds to the existing pipe walls. Once in place, crews reopen service connections to each property with a cutter on a remotely operated vehicle. The result is a pipe stronger than the original, with a smoother flow that will last well over the next 60 years.
While Slip Lining is a common practice in the sewer industry, it hasn’t been used much in the City of Bristol until now. The entire project takes just a few days, saving over a million in costs and sparing residents months of construction headaches from a full road excavation.
