Next week, we will celebrate Month of the Military Child with a spirit week! This special week is all about recognizing and supporting military kids—students who show strength, courage, and flexibility every day. We’ll show our support with some fun spirit days:

Monday is Patriotic Day — wear red, white, and blue to show pride in our country and our military-connected students.

Tuesday is Camouflage Day — dress in camo to show support for military kids who know how to blend in and adapt to new situations.

Wednesday is Purple Up Day — wear purple as a special way to say, “Military kids, we see you and support you!”

Thursday is RED Day, which stands for “Remember Everyone Deployed.” Wearing red shows care for students who may miss a parent or loved one.

Friday is Pajama Day — a fun and comfy way to end the week as a school community.

We are excited to invite you to our Family Heritage Festival on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 PM at Piney Branch Elementary School!

We have 17 countries/regions represented so far! We have lots of food, five dancers to watch, crafts from India and Germany, Henna tattoos, and many students and their families plan to attend dressed in their traditional family clothing.

We need more participants to make it successful. Please sign-up today to join in on the fun and represent your country, state, or traditions!

We invite your family to participate by sharing something meaningful about your heritage. Families have shared in many creative ways, such as:
Creating a poster about their state, country, language, or tradition
Bringing a favorite traditional food to share
Wearing traditional clothing
Teaching a craft or art activity
Performing a dance, song, or martial arts demonstration
Reading a story in their home language
Other ideas are encouraged

There is no “right” way to participate — big or small, every contribution helps make the evening special.

Save Our Blue Planet!

Clean water keeps people, animals, and even plants healthy. Earth Day is next month and we are collecting items now to do our part.

Please donate cardboard boxes, plastic water bottles, and plastic grocery bags for the cool activities that we have planned! Start bringing them in and drop them off in front of the Art Room into the correct bins!

Congratulations to our three fifth graders who represented Piney Branch at the PWCS All County Elementary Chorus event on Saturday, February 21 at Colgan High School. Three fifth grade students are selected from each elementary school throughout the school division and rehearse for weeks to prepare for this special, day-long event!

Tickets for our Piney Branch production of Disney's Finding Nemo Kids are on sale! Over 200 of our Piney Branch third, fourth, and fifth graders have been working hard for months to prepare for this special event. We hope you can join us! Students will also have a chance to see a performance of the show at an in-school assembly during the school day.

We are thrilled to share that the VFW Virginia Department announced Ms. Bartoli has been named the 2025 VFW Department of Virginia Smart/Maher Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year at the elementary school level.

Ms. Bartoli’s recognition began with selection as VFW Post 12218 (Haymarket) Teacher of the Year, followed by District 8 Teacher of the Year, and culminated in her selection as the statewide winner, earning top honors among nominees from all 12 VFW districts in Virginia.

This prestigious award recognizes outstanding teachers who promote citizenship, patriotism, and a strong sense of civic responsibility among students. Ms. Bartoli exemplifies these values through her leadership of Piney Branch’s Purple Star program, her work supporting military-connected families, and her commitment to helping students develop empathy, advocacy skills, and pride in their community and country.

As the state winner, Ms. Bartoli will now represent Virginia at the national level, competing with elementary school teachers from across the United States and its territories.

We are incredibly proud of Ms. Bartoli and grateful for the lasting impact she makes on our students, families, and school community every day. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

Congratulations to the 8 Stars and Mechanical Cardinals, who competed in the state First Lego League tournament at JMU on Saturday. The Mechanical Cardinals improved their robot game by 80 points. The 8 Stars increased their robot game by 55 points and got all “Accomplished” ratings in their robot presentation. Great job, Cardinals! Thanks to Mr. Ferrell and Ms. Roberts for coaching the teams.
