Yesterday morning, following the cleanup of the accident on I-75 involving Engine 11, at 10:24 AM Brodhead Fire Department was dispatched on mutual aid to Climax Fire Department for a reported climber stranded on “Paint Rock” off Burnt Ridge Road.

Brodhead Fire Department, Mount Vernon Fire Department, and Climax Fire Department responded to the scene, where crews located a climber stranded approximately 60 feet up a vertical cliff face. The climber was not wearing a safety harness, creating a complex and high-risk rescue situation.

Rope rescue technicians from the responding departments quickly developed and executed a high-angle rope rescue pickoff, successfully removing the climber from the cliff face and bringing them safely to the ground.

This incident highlights the dedication, training, and teamwork of our local emergency responders, who transitioned directly from one major incident to another to serve those in need.

This morning, Brodhead Fire Department responded to an injury accident on I-75 northbound at the 69.8 mile marker.

Upon arrival, Engine 11 was positioned in a blocking position to protect the scene, closing the right travel lane. Command 12 was positioned well in advance of the incident as a warning vehicle to provide additional scene protection for responders and motorists.

While crews were operating on the scene, a passenger vehicle failed to move over and struck Engine 11 on the driver’s side. As a result of the collision, one Brodhead firefighter was transported from the scene to Saint Joseph Berea for evaluation and has since been treated and released. The occupant of the passenger vehicle refused treatment and transport at the scene.

Kentucky State Police Post 11 responded and is actively investigating both collisions.

This incident serves as an important reminder that Kentucky’s Move Over Law exists to protect emergency responders, law enforcement, tow operators, highway workers, and the motoring public. When you see emergency vehicles with lights activated, slow down and move over. If you cannot safely move over, reduce your speed and proceed with extreme caution.

Thankfully, today’s incident did not result in more serious injuries.

As EMS Week 2026 comes to a close, Brodhead Fire Department would like to take a moment to recognize another incredibly important part of our team—our CPR and First Aid trained firefighters.

While these members may not currently hold an EMS certification or licensure, they are a critical part of our emergency response system. These dedicated firefighters routinely respond to medical emergencies alongside our EMS personnel and, at times, may be the only responders immediately available to help someone in crisis.

From providing CPR, first aid, patient care, comfort, and support in those first critical moments, these members make a real difference in the lives of the people we serve. Their willingness to answer the call—regardless of the emergency—reflects the true heart of the fire service.

BFD would like to recognize and thank:

Asst. Chief Larry Albright
Captain Curtis Burton
Captain Brad Todd

May 17–23 is EMS Week, and in the spirit of EMS Week, Brodhead Fire Department would like to recognize FF / Advanced EMT Josh Hayes for his dedication and service to both the department and our community.

Josh consistently demonstrates professionalism, compassion, and commitment while serving others. We are proud to have him as part of the BFD family.

BFD currently has 15 licensed or certified EMS providers on our roster, ranging from EMT-Basic to Paramedic. These providers work professionally in emergency medical services and also volunteer their skills and service here at BFD. We are extremely thankful for their dedication, commitment, and continued service to our community.

Advanced EMTs (AEMTs) play a vital role in prehospital emergency medical care by providing an expanded level of care beyond the EMT-Basic scope of practice. In addition to foundational EMT skills such as patient assessment, CPR, oxygen administration, and bleeding control, AEMTs are trained to perform more advanced interventions including intravenous access, administering a broader range of emergency medications, advanced airway adjuncts, and other lifesaving procedures based on state protocols and scope of practice. Becoming an Advanced EMT requires additional education beyond EMT certification, successful completion of practical and written examinations, state and/or national certification requirements, and ongoing continuing education to maintain licensure. AEMTs serve as a critical bridge between EMTs and paramedics, bringing enhanced care directly to patients when rapid intervention is needed most.

BFD would also like to thank all EMS providers for the sacrifices they make and the care they provide each and every day. Your service does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for everything you do for our community.

Happy EMS Week!

May 17–23 is EMS Week, and in the spirit of EMS Week, Brodhead Fire Department would like to recognize FF / EMT Kim Luna for her dedication and service to both the department and our community.

Kim consistently demonstrates professionalism, compassion, and commitment while serving others. We are proud to have her as part of the BFD family.

EMT-Basics play a vital role in emergency response and patient care. They are trained to provide basic life support, assess patients, control bleeding, administer oxygen, assist with certain medications, perform CPR, operate AEDs, and help stabilize patients during medical emergencies and traumatic incidents. Becoming an EMT-Basic requires completion of a state-approved education program, hands-on skills training, successful completion of practical and written examinations, CPR certification, and ongoing continuing education to maintain licensure. EMTs are often among the first medical providers to arrive on scene and provide calm, professional care during some of the most stressful moments in a person’s life.

BFD would also like to thank all EMS providers for the sacrifices they make and the care they provide each and every day. Your service does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for everything you do for our community.

Happy EMS Week!
