Join us for a StoryWalk® at Ray Harral Nature Center this summer May 22nd - June 8th!

Stroll at your own pace and read A Stone Sat Still by Brendan Wenzel. This activity is free and open to the public.

Have fun enjoying nature and talking with your child as you read this story together! There are discussion prompts and activity ideas on each post. Feel free to do one, a few, or all as you proceed through the StoryWalk®. Talking about stories together is a wonderful way to help your child become a reader!

This Ray Harral Nature Center StoryWalk® is planned by the City of Broken Arrow Parks and Recreation and the Tulsa City-County Library. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.

Mother deer will often leave their fawns alone while they go out to feed. By staying away, they help keep predators from being drawn to the fawn.

Fawns are taught to stay as still and motionless as possible for protection. So if you come across a fawn that appears healthy and is quietly lying by itself, chances are it is perfectly fine and its mother is nearby keeping watch from a distance.

If you are unsure, please call Wild Heart Ranch, and they can help guide you in determining whether the fawn truly needs assistance. Just because it may look like it needs help does not always mean it does.

Rainy days mean mushroom blooms! Look for them on dead wood, like logs, stumps and even this woody vine.

Why did the turtle cross the road? We may never know, but our nature center staff was happy to help this traveler safely continue its journey! Arms out, traffic paused, and one turtle was protected along the way.

If you see a turtle crossing the road and it is safe to do so, stop and help move it in the direction it is already going. Turtles know where they’re headed, and turning them around can put them right back in danger.

One important reminder: please do not take turtles from their habitat and place them somewhere new. Moving them away from their home range can make it difficult for them to survive.

Aspiring scientists will conduct real field research on land, air, and water in this hands-on summer workshop series. Together we will study plants and animals in their natural ecosystems and learn tricks of the trade from experienced teacher naturalists.

Participants will practice real scientific field techniques including:
Collecting and identifying plant specimens
Tracking the movements of animals
Observing animal behavior in natural habitats
Recording and discussing ecological findings

Throughout the workshop, students will explore the vital role scientists play as advocates for the environment and gain a deeper understanding of how research helps protect our natural world.

This program is designed as a 4-part workshop series, and participants are encouraged to attend all four sessions so they can fully participate in the research activities and field investigations. Because this is a small-group field experience, the workshop is limited to just 10 participants, allowing plenty of one-on-one guidance and hands-on research time.

Dates (4-Part Friday Series)
