Great news for the Town of Bronson! Governor Ron DeSantis announced today that the Florida Department of Commerce has awarded the Town of Bronson a Small Cities Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $1.38 million to benefit persons of low and moderate income. The Town’s application was in the area of Neighborhood Revitalization for infrastructure including water, sewer and streets for the Habitat for Humanity’s new neighborhood located at 680 School Street.

In accepting this grant, Mayor Bruce Greenlee said, β€œWe hope this is the beginning of many good things to come our way. It will bring new customers for water and sewer, and it will provide some sewer infrastructure for a few septic-to-sewer conversions, which is important for the Town’s Basin Management Action Plan requirements.”

Vice Mayor Virginia Phillips, who lives in this neighborhood and went door-to-door to get all the surveys completed, is also thrilled about this opportunity to bring a real affordable housing development to Bronson. β€œI am very excited that this CDBG grant has been awarded to the Town of Bronson, and I look forward to seeing it all start to come together.”

β€œWe are incredibly grateful for our collaboration with the Town of Bronson and the Department of Commerce for taking this impactful project from a mere concept to a reality. Our organization is beyond excited to serve the local, hard-working families of Bronson by providing safe, secure, and truly affordable housing,” said Justin Leech, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of the Nature Coast. β€œThis neighborhood of affordable homes marks a major milestone as it will be the first of its kind in the Town of Bronson, as well as Levy County.”

With the funding in place, the Town of Bronson will now work with the Habitat of Humanity for the Nature Coast in developing these 33 units of new owner-occupied affordable housing. The successful funding application was prepared by Fred Fox Enterprises, Inc., the Town’s grant consultant, along with the Town's engineering firm of CPH Consulting, LLC, which assisted the Town in identifying the funding opportunity, developing the project and preparing and submitting the application.

John Petrohovich, Client Services Manager, CPH Consulting, LLC, said, β€œI want to thank the Town Manager, Mayor, Council and staff for their willingness to work with the team on a very tight timeline and hold the required public meetings to move the application forward. Bronson showed 100% commitment throughout the entire process. Working with the Town, Fred Fox Enterprises, Habitat for Humanity, and our team at CPH was a great team effort.”

Hey, folks. We are going to hope that these other two spots disappear quickly, like Cristobal. But just in case they don’t, let’s do the following:

1. Start checking on your storm supplies. Things like fresh batteries, working flash lights, a tune up on the generator. These are yearly things we should do by June 1st, but really don’t until we know a storm is out in the Atlantic or Gulf.

2. Watch the weather as they start to develop in case further preparation is needed. Hopefully, they dissipate or go another direction, but if not, we need to be ready. Stay tuned!
