In 1969, New York State became the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Uprising and marks continued resistance against forces working to roll back hard-fought and hard-won human rights.

In New York, we stand with the LGBTQ+ community—and the Division will continue to enforce our nation-leading protections based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

On this Memorial Day, we honor service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice—and we remind New York’s veterans and military servicemembers that you are protected from discrimination based on your military status. If you ever need assistance, the Division is here to support: dhr.ny.gov

New Yorkers should know that age-based discrimination is illegal. If you believe you have experienced discrimination due to your age, report it to us at dhr.ny.gov

Today, the Division joined Governor Kathy Hochul, the Buffalo Urban League, and our Western NY Hate and Bias Prevention Council for the annual Day of Remembrance & Service to honor those lost during the racially motivated mass shooting that took place at a Tops Supermarket in Buffalo’s east side in 2022.

Together, we will continue the work of rooting out racism and all forms of hate in New York State.
