Today marks the 2-year anniversary of the historic protest!

On May 2, 2016, in support of the maintenance workers' unionization campaign, 18 members of Workers' Justice occupied then-president Karen Lawrence's office in Westlands, and many more SLC students joined to occupy the Westlands lobbies. Protestors demanded the school negotiate in good faith with the workers' representatives in IUOE Local 30 and accept their latest contract proposal, and that students not face punishment for protesting.

Just four months and one day after the Occupation, Local 30 won their union contract, making them the first workers on campus to be represented by a labor union.

According to Local 30: "Today, largely because of [students'] commitment to the maintenance workers and their rights to have a voice at work, the Local 30 crew at SLC are earning higher wages, have better benefits and a strong union behind them every day. This campaign proves that we are all stronger together!"

Very exciting news out of Harvard today, where grad workers voted resoundingly for unionization in a long-scheduled vote! Huge congratulations to them, and thanks for continuing to advance our shared movement.

Unionization of private universities is not an aberration or fluke. We don't need more concerned emails from administrators, nor more advisory committees.

It's time for university admins nationwide to stop fighting reality and !
