One of the most common—and easiest to miss—household leaks happens in the toilet tank, often caused by a worn-out flapper.

Over time, the rubber flapper at the bottom of the tank can wear out and allow water to slowly seep into the bowl around the clock.

If your water bill has been creeping up, this is an easy place to check.

Check yours with this simple test:

The Dye Test: Drop a little food coloring (or a leak detection tablet) into the toilet tank. Tablets can be picked up at City Hall if you need them.

The Wait: Wait about 15 minutes—or test it overnight. Just be sure not to flush during that time.

The Reveal: Check the toilet bowl. If you see colored water, you’ve likely found a leak.

The good news is a replacement flapper usually costs less than $10 and takes just a few minutes to install. Fixing a small leak like this can save water and help keep your utility bill in check.

A worn-out flapper can leak up to 200 gallons of water a day, which adds up quickly on your water bill.
