While Connecticut has enjoyed a period of relative calm over the last five years, the tropical systems of 2021 (Elsa, Fred, Henri, and Ida) and the severe flood of August 2024 were reminders of the risks posed by natural disasters. The region’s communities have shared in the development and adoption of a “natural hazard mitigation plan” for two decades, with updates incorporated every five years.

WestCOG is performing resilience planning to inform future hazard mitigation plans. Efforts will lead to mitigation actions that can be taken to reduce losses of property and life due to natural disasters like floods, severe wind events, winter storms, wildfires, droughts, extreme heat events, and earthquakes.

⛈ SEVERE WEATHER BRIEFING – BROOKFIELD, CT ⛈

The National Weather Service is forecasting the potential for multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms across the area today, primarily between 12:00 PM and 11:00 PM.

❗ What to expect:

Strong thunderstorms capable of producing frequent lightning, gusty to damaging winds, and torrential rainfall.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed our area under a Level 2 (Slight) Risk for severe weather, with a low but possible tornado threat in the region.

The Weather Prediction Center also indicates a risk for localized flash flooding, especially in areas that receive repeated heavy downpours.

An Air Quality Alert remains in effect due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, which may reduce air quality through the day.

✅ Secure outdoor furniture and loose items.

✅ Charge your mobile devices before storms arrive.

✅ Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

✅ Never drive through flooded roadways, Turn Around, Don't Drown.

Scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms are expected across the state tomorrow with heavy rainfall and damaging winds. An isolated tornado, flash flooding and hail are possible.

The National Weather Service is expecting above normal temperatures for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week with Thursdays temperatures being forecasted 1 degree away from 90 triggering a heat wave.

Based on the forecast, the Office of the Governor has approved the activation of the extreme heat protocol beginning at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, and continuing through 5:00 PM on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

The following locations will be available as cooling centers during their normal business hours: Brookfield, CT Senior Center, The Brookfield Library and the Regional YMCA of Western CT.

Governor Lamont Provides Update on Impacts From Saturday Evening’s Severe Storms

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont released the following statement regarding the severe weather that impacted Connecticut on Saturday evening:

“Last night’s severe storms left thousands of homes in the region without power, and while utility crews immediately began working on restoration, they believe that repairs in certain areas may take several days due to the scale of damage across the area,” Governor Lamont said. “The utilities have called down additional crews from Canada to help restore power in Connecticut as soon as possible, and our administration will do anything in our ability that can help expedite power restoration. Additionally, the state’s emergency response team remains in contact with every affected town and stands ready to send additional support the moment a municipality requests it. Connecticut has been through storms like this before, and we get through them by looking out for one another. Stay safe, and we’ll keep you updated.”

A few additional things residents can do:

❗️ If you rely on medically necessary equipment and lose power, or if you have an emergency, call 9-1-1.

⚠️ Stay clear of any downed power lines. Always assume they are live and dangerous; report them to your utility right away.

⚠️ For real-time updates on state road closures, visit CTroads.org . Obey all signage when approaching road closures. The Connecticut Department of Transportation and municipalities are coordinating with utilities to clear roads of downed trees and power lines.

✅ Check on elderly neighbors, family, and anyone who may need a hand.

📌 For non-emergency help, contact your town’s local officials. You can also visit www.211ct.org or call 2-1-1 for more information.

📌 Keep monitoring weather alerts over the coming days, as additional rainfall could bring a risk of flash flooding. Never drive through a flooded road.

Governor Ned Lamont today announced that as a long-duration heat wave is expected to impact Connecticut, he is ordering the state’s Extreme Hot Weather Protocol to be activated effective at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, and remaining in effect through at least 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

Brookfield’s cooling centers will be available as posted below, during their normal business hours.

Governor Ned Lamont has recently announced the activation of Connecticut's Extreme Hot Weather Protocol, effective from 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026, until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2026. In response to forecasted multi-day periods of severe heat and humidity, this protocol aims to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents.

Cooling centers across the state, including Brookfield, are now open to provide relief during this period. We urge all citizens to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the heat.
