At its Jan. 10 meeting, the Brookhaven City Council approved a 6-month moratorium on all land use petitions and land development permits on the section of Buford Highway within the city limits.
“Buford Highway is an exciting corridor in the City of Brookhaven. It is our international culture corridor. There are many opportunities for development and redevelopment along Buford Highway, but as we are reviewing the Comprehensive Plan at this juncture, it’s a good time to pause and ensure we have a game plan for the future,” said District 4 Councilman John Funny.
The moratorium remains in effect until July 1 but can be rescinded when the Comprehensive Plan and zoning updates are enacted. The moratorium will not affect land use petitions and land development permits that have been already submitted prior to January 10.
“The Comprehensive Plan already identifies this area as prime for higher densities and it’s a no-brainer with the capacity that exists along the corridor and the close proximity to I-85, Children’s Healthcare and Emory Musculoskeletal,” said Councilman Funny. “This moratorium ensures that the vision originally created for this area with public input from dedicated community stakeholders is properly manifested through the Comprehensive Plan re-write process and conveys a clear understanding of what we are trying to achieve with developers.”
