The Brookings Disability Awareness Committee (Previously the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities) strives to advocate for the rights of people who have disabilities in our community. Throughout the year, specific events are held to bring awareness and information to our citizens. Technical assistance is provided to the business community, private individuals, governmental entities

and nonprofit organizations. The goals of this service are to improve the quality of life for people who have disabilities through enhancing the knowledge base of entities in the community; and to further serve as a community-based advocacy group enhancing the ability of local entities to comply with Federal Civil Rights legislation.

Check out this spotlight on the Life Skills Lab at Mickelson Middle School, funded in part by a mini-grant from our committee!

Special education students at Mickelson Middle School have new opportunities to grow thanks to the new life skills lab.

The lab was created thanks to the energy and efforts of Alysha Hamann, life skills education teacher at MMS.

โ€œAs a special education teacher, Iโ€™m always thinking โ€˜I can always use that money for something. What could I do thatโ€™s really impactful?โ€™โ€
