Members of the Brookings Fire Department recently sharpened their skills with hands-on thermal imaging camera training. These tools help firefighters locate hidden heat sources, improve visibility in smoke-filled environments, and enhance search-and-rescue operations when every second counts.

The last photo shows just how dark and nearly impossible to see the environment is when smoke filled outside of the TIC image.

Continuous training ensures our crews stay prepared to protect lives, property, and our community with the latest technology and tactics.

Do you know? Is your local fire department filled with volunteers? Here in Brookings we are!

Across the country, many times volunteers are the ones responding when the call comes in. ๐Ÿš’โค๏ธ This National Volunteer Week, weโ€™re recognizing the impact they make every day.

If youโ€™ve ever thought about stepping up, reach out to your local fire department.

Update from Brookings Airport Prescribed Burn on 4.14.26. 8.6 acres were burned off. The burn went as planned. Weather and wind changes were fairly minor allowing for near to ideal conditions for what we were burning. We were able to remove most of the cured cattail areas in that location which could potentially hold wildlife that create strike hazards to aircraft.

With this springโ€™s continuing gusty winds and dry conditions, the Brookings Fire Department is asking for the publicโ€™s help in preventing outdoor fires. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ

โ€œWe want to remind everyone of the increased fire risks and the steps each of us can take to stay safe,โ€ said Fire Marshal Jared Runge. Here are some important fire safety tips to keep in mind:

๐Ÿ”ฅ Avoid outdoor burning. Outdoor fires can spread quickly.
๐Ÿ›ป Do not drive over vegetated areas. Avoid parking on dry grass. Heat from your vehicleโ€™s engine or exhaust could easily start a fire.
๐Ÿšœ Check tow, or other hanging, chains on vehicles, trailers or machinery. They could cause a spark.
๐Ÿชš Use caution when working outside and using various tools.
๐Ÿšฌ Properly dispose of all smoking materials. Do not discard ci******es, cigarette butts or matches outdoors.
๐Ÿ‚ Maintain your property. Keep your yard free of dry leaves, dead vegetation and other potential fire fuels.
๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿณ Use grills safely. Keep outdoor grills away from dry grass. Always supervise grills and ensure they are completely cooled before storing.
๐Ÿ“ป Monitor local news and weather reports for fire danger levels and fire restrictions. If a fire warning is in effect, be extra cautious.
๐Ÿšซ Heed any local fire restrictions. A burn ban is currently in effect for Brookings County โ€“ outside the Brookings city limits. Learn more at www.brookingscountysd.gov.
๐Ÿ“ฒ Quickly report fires to local authorities. Call 9-1-1. Early notification plays a critical role in allowing fire crews to respond quickly and effectively.

Together, let's avoid sparking a fire! ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ฅ
