With this springโs continuing gusty winds and dry conditions, the Brookings Fire Department is asking for the publicโs help in preventing outdoor fires. ๐ฌ๏ธ๐ฅ
โWe want to remind everyone of the increased fire risks and the steps each of us can take to stay safe,โ said Fire Marshal Jared Runge. Here are some important fire safety tips to keep in mind:
๐ฅ Avoid outdoor burning. Outdoor fires can spread quickly.
๐ป Do not drive over vegetated areas. Avoid parking on dry grass. Heat from your vehicleโs engine or exhaust could easily start a fire.
๐ Check tow, or other hanging, chains on vehicles, trailers or machinery. They could cause a spark.
๐ช Use caution when working outside and using various tools.
๐ฌ Properly dispose of all smoking materials. Do not discard ci******es, cigarette butts or matches outdoors.
๐ Maintain your property. Keep your yard free of dry leaves, dead vegetation and other potential fire fuels.
๐ง๐ผโ๐ณ Use grills safely. Keep outdoor grills away from dry grass. Always supervise grills and ensure they are completely cooled before storing.
๐ป Monitor local news and weather reports for fire danger levels and fire restrictions. If a fire warning is in effect, be extra cautious.
๐ซ Heed any local fire restrictions. A burn ban is currently in effect for Brookings County โ outside the Brookings city limits. Learn more at www.brookingscountysd.gov.
๐ฒ Quickly report fires to local authorities. Call 9-1-1. Early notification plays a critical role in allowing fire crews to respond quickly and effectively.
Together, let's avoid sparking a fire! ๐ซ๐ฅ
