Some of the Sophomore ID students took a walking tour of Phillips Avenue and the newly developed Steel District in downtown Sioux Falls this week. They stopped by the Arc of Dreams, the stunning stainless-steel sculpture by renowned South Dakota artist Dale Lamphere! 👍🏽✨🏢

We have another special introduction today as we welcome Professor Sarah Mannes Homstad!👏👊🏼📐

EXPERIENCE: Sarah has a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University, and a Master of Architecture degree from Iowa State University. During my three years as a graduate student, she was both a research assistant and a teaching assistant. After finishing her Masters, she worked in Minneapolis for four years, working on fairly large projects for the State of Minnesota. When Sarah returned to South Dakota - which is where she grew up - she worked with her dad in his architectural practice. Together they designed a wide variety of projects together: educational, municipal, commercial, and religious. When her dad retired, Sarah shifted the focus of her practice to doing small commercial projects and custom residential work. It’s been a really diverse and enjoyable journey!

WHY DESIGN: Sarah grew up around her dad’s architectural practice - making blue prints! - and her mom was an artist, so design mattered in their household. When she began pursuing design academically and then professionally, Sarah discovered her people - i.e. design nerds.

AREAS OF PRACTICE: As a registered architect, Sarah has done both building design and interior design. She mostly worked for smaller offices, which has allowed her to do everything from marketing and web design to modeling and contract administration. Sarah has always enjoyed the process of seeing projects through from start to finish.

ADVICE TO STUDENTS: There are a variety of ways to utilize your design education, from contributing to the work of a team to establishing yourself as your own boss! You’re learning to problem solve and find creative solutions; to test ideas and work collaboratively! Try a few different things to see what suits you best, and don’t be afraid to carve your own path!

We are so excited to see the knowledge and passion Professor Sarah has to share in the classroom! 👏🏢🏗️✨

Introducing one of our newest faculty members: Jimena Vivas 👏👏

EXPERIENCE: Professor Jimena has a masters degree in Interior Design from the International University of Valencia, Spain. She has specialized in higher education at Juan Agustin Maza University and in Mendoza, Spain. She also has a bachelor’s in design from University of Mendoza in Argentina where she has also been a clothing and textile designer!

WHY DESIGN: Professor Jimena has enjoyed being artistic from a very young age. During her teenage years she was exposed to the realm of design and architecture and wanted to work in residential design to enhance life quality of humans.

AREAS OF PRACTICE: She has been working as a freelance interior designer, mostly in residential development where she has had the opportunity to work in different places, such as Dubai. She has also been a professor of Urban Planning and Design in Argentina for 12 years! While in Argentina she also was a theater costume designer at the Teatro Colon in Bruno’s Aires.

ADVICE FOR STUDENTS: Jimena believes that commitment and engagement to your passions are keys to success and will take you far in all things possible!

We are so pleased and excited for the great things Professor Jimena will provide as a part of this program! 👊🏼✏️📐
