We have another special introduction today as we welcome Professor Sarah Mannes Homstad!👏👊🏼📐
EXPERIENCE: Sarah has a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University, and a Master of Architecture degree from Iowa State University. During my three years as a graduate student, she was both a research assistant and a teaching assistant. After finishing her Masters, she worked in Minneapolis for four years, working on fairly large projects for the State of Minnesota. When Sarah returned to South Dakota - which is where she grew up - she worked with her dad in his architectural practice. Together they designed a wide variety of projects together: educational, municipal, commercial, and religious. When her dad retired, Sarah shifted the focus of her practice to doing small commercial projects and custom residential work. It’s been a really diverse and enjoyable journey!
WHY DESIGN: Sarah grew up around her dad’s architectural practice - making blue prints! - and her mom was an artist, so design mattered in their household. When she began pursuing design academically and then professionally, Sarah discovered her people - i.e. design nerds.
AREAS OF PRACTICE: As a registered architect, Sarah has done both building design and interior design. She mostly worked for smaller offices, which has allowed her to do everything from marketing and web design to modeling and contract administration. Sarah has always enjoyed the process of seeing projects through from start to finish.
ADVICE TO STUDENTS: There are a variety of ways to utilize your design education, from contributing to the work of a team to establishing yourself as your own boss! You’re learning to problem solve and find creative solutions; to test ideas and work collaboratively! Try a few different things to see what suits you best, and don’t be afraid to carve your own path!
We are so excited to see the knowledge and passion Professor Sarah has to share in the classroom! 👏🏢🏗️✨
