The Chetco Indian Memorial is now completely done and officially open to the public! I'm sharing a short video showing the unveiling of the Lucy Dick statue. We couldn't have a big opening ceremony like we hoped, but after the years of work we felt we should mark its completion in some way.

This short video can't really do justice to all of the people who helped with the project over the years, but it gives an idea of all the work that has gone into it. Thank you again for all your support!

It has been so encouraging, during this difficult year, to receive support from the community and to hear from people what the memorial means to them. We are happy to share that we are just doing a few finishing touches and then this project will be DONE. Here are some beautiful pictures of the memorial taken this week... Thank you all for your support.

A sneak peek at what will be coming in early 2020...plant identification labels for the indigenous plant garden! The 140-foot berm has been engineered to hold live plants, which are currently getting established and should be lovely come spring. This showcase garden will share some of the Chetco plant uses for food, basketry, and tools.

Thank you to the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund, Collins Foundation, Reser Family Foundation, Oregon Heritage Commission, Oregon Cultural Trust, and all of our wonderful donors for supporting this exciting phase of the project!

The panels are UP!!! They share the history and seasonal activities of the Chetco people. This was by far the most tedious, time-consuming part of the project, and we are so grateful to WOW Arts and Exhibits for their beautiful design. This project is close to being complete--more updates coming soon. :-D

In light of the recent news about homeless camping at the port, we want to issue a response regarding the conflicts there. We want the memorial site and surrounding port area to be welcoming and safe to visitors, and we want the area to be treated with respect. However, no one affiliated with the Chetco Historical Memorial Project is calling for anybody to resign or trying to influence how the port operates. The Port of Brookings-Harbor has supported our project for years, and Interim Port Manager Kathy Lindley-Hall has been respectful in her conversations with us. Regarding the homeless man camping at the site, we are working with the port leadership to find solutions.

While we appreciate the sentiment behind defending the memorial site, we want to be clear that the recent opposition to the port has come from people who do not represent the Chetco Indian Memorial. To our knowledge, much of the tribal opposition to the port leadership has come from members of the neighboring Tolowa tribe in northern California, who are culturally distinct from the Chetco. The site at the mouth of the Chetco River is the ancestral site of two Chetco Indian villages, and is not “sacred Tolowa land” as one recent protester claimed. We will give updates on the camping issue as new info becomes available.
