A lot has changed since 1901, but one thing that has stayed the same....BMU is locally owned and a proud Public Power Utility.

Today we hide electrical and utility lines underground, but power line installation in 1901 was far more dangerous. This photo from our book "South Dakota 125" shows workers bringing electricity to Brookings.

Today is 811 Day, a great reminder that anytime you're planning a digging project — whether it's planting a tree, setting a fence post or building a garden bed — it all begins with a simple call to 811. It's a quick, free service that helps you discover what's underground before you start digging. Even a shovel can damage underground utility lines. Call 811 before you dig.

📢 ATTENTION: Residents may notice crews working near transmission poles throughout the week. BMU has hired SBS Inspections, Inc. to perform transmission pole testing and inspections for BMU.
🚨 Starting this week, crews will be working near poles in road ditches, boulevards, and residential yards. This work may involve digging, drilling, hammering, and other activities needed to assess pole strength. Areas disturbed during inspections will be restored upon completion of the work. Inspections should be completed by the end of the week.
🔎 These inspections help ensure the reliability of our electric system and the dependable service our customers expect. Questions? Call BMU at 605-692-6325.

Just because it says "flushable" doesn't mean you should flush it!

"Flushable" wipes can cause major clogs in your home's plumbing and our sewer system. The best place for wipes is the trash can.

Flush only toilet paper. Save yourself a headache. Help protect our community's infrastructure.

Just a reminder since June 1, BMU has moved to a four-day-per-week watering schedule, which is different from last year’s requirements.

At this time we will not be issuing any exception permits for new lawns. Customers must follow the 4 day water restrictions schedule.
