Sadly, this weekend's rain was not enough, and we are still under drought burn restrictions. No open burning or fireworks are permitted anywhere in Brooklin until further notice. Any grill or cooking fire must be in a container with an enclosed bottom and a cover or spark screen on top. Please make sure that your tenants, renters, and house guests know about this restriction.

Drier weather is forecast to follow the weekend soaker. Unfortunately, all that rain was not sufficient to put an end to our drought. A single rain event contributes only a tiny fraction of the water needed to restore such a large-scale hydrologic system. You can see the telltale signs of our deeper water deficits by looking at your local USGS river gage which likely showed little rise as much of the rainfall was absorbed directly into the very dry topsoils and vegetation. Soil moisture depletion extends much deeper than the surface layer in a severe drought, requiring substantial prolonged saturation to fully rehydrate. Unfortunately, the short and extended forecasts favor limited opportunities for such rainfall events. The recommendations of state and local officials are to implement water conservation practices.
