It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Fessenden.

For more than twenty years, Mark proudly served the Brookline Fire Department, retiring at the rank of Captain. His dedication to the community did not end with his retirement. He continued to serve as a member of the Brookline Fire Department Association, the Fire Wards and was recognized as an Honorary Member of the Brookline Fire Department.

Mark had a special passion for preserving Brookline's history. He devoted countless hours to maintaining and restoring the department's antique fire truck collection, ensuring these historic pieces remained in running order for future generations to appreciate. His commitment to preserving the department's heritage reflected the same dedication and pride he brought to his years of active service. Whether answering the call as a firefighter, serving his community through the Fire Wards, or sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for local history, Mark made a lasting impact on the Town of Brookline and the Brookline Fire Department.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mark's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His friendship, service, and devotion to the fire service and our community will not be forgotten.

Happy Mother’s Day to mothers everywhere, including all the amazing moms of our association! You are running households, raising great kids, and somehow still putting up with all of us at the station. We don’t know how you do it, but we’re grateful every single day.
Special shoutout to our camera shy secretary who is always working hard behind the scenes and disappearing the second a camera comes out. One of these days we will catch more than the side of your face in a picture… maybe.
Hope today you get a break from the chaos at home and at the station. You’ve definitely earned it.

Engine 2 was toned out to a late night stroll down Laurel Crest to investigate a report of propane odor. Out of frame but very much on the job, a four-gas meter helped guide the investigation. That tool exists thanks to donations from our annual letter drive, which means every contribution plays a part in keeping our neighbors safe.

Big thanks to everyone who showed up, cheered on the RMMS Easter egg hunt, and bravely fueled up at our mobile breakfast sandwich station—because nothing says “egg hunt” like eating eggs while chasing eggs!

We hope to see you there!! “Hop” on out for a fun morning, and get some breakfast while you’re at it!

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our own.

Dave Michaud was a dedicated firefighter and a proud honorary member of our Association. He had a deep passion for the fire service and was especially devoted to preserving its history, spending many hours restoring and caring for antique apparatus and memorabilia.

His love for the job, its traditions, and the people in it was clear to everyone who knew him. There was never a gray area on where you stood with Dave. His knowledge, dedication, and friendship will be greatly missed.

Please keep his family, friends, and fellow firefighters in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Rest easy, brother. Your watch is over. We will take it from here

This month, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on firefighter Jay Duval.

Jay joined the Brookline Fire Department at the end of 2016, inspired by a moment in his life he’ll never forget. When his son was very young, he began choking on an apple. Although he was able to dislodge it, an ambulance responded shortly after. Deputy Chief Richard Gribble was on scene, and the professionalism, calmness, and genuine care he showed toward his son left a lasting impression. Jay is not even sure DC Gribble knows the impact he had, but that experience helped shape his path in the fire service.

Jay holds his Firefighter I certification and brings that same level of dedication to everything he does.

Outside the station, he’s married to his wife, Lynne Duval, and together they have raised a busy blended family of six kids. He works as the Maintenance Director at Ledgewood Bay Assisted Living in Milford, a position he’s held for the past five years. Helping people has always been important to him, whether through his career, volunteering as a firefighter, or supporting families in need through local food drives.

In his spare time, he keeps active and curious by buying storage lockers and selling the contents, fishing with his son, metal detecting, hiking, and scuba diving.

New year, new spotlight!

This month we’re featuring firefighter Rob Danckert.

Rob brings a powerful mix of experience, dedication, and heart to our department. He is Pro Board–certified as Firefighter I & II and Fire-EMS Instructor I, and is also certified as a New Hampshire State Fire Instructor. Rob also serves as an alternate on the BFD Association Board.

Rob first served our community from 2013–2015 before stepping away to focus on his family and raising his young children. In 2021, he proudly returned to the department to continue his commitment to service.

Outside the station, Rob stays just as busy. He spent nearly 20 years playing Division I–III men’s rugby(a true testament to his grit and teamwork.) He’s a proud dad to a 9-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter. You’ll often spot him on the sidelines as an assistant coach for his daughter’s lacrosse and basketball teams. During the winter months, he also works seasonally as a snowboard instructor at Crotched Mountain.

By day, Rob works full-time as a geologist and estimator for a national drilling company.

When he’s not juggling work, family, and service, Rob enjoys sushi of all kinds, cherishes the daily goodbye waves from his kids as they head off to school, and is forever grateful for his wife’s patience with his (admittedly) bad jokes.

The December Firefighter Spotlight is Lieutenant Tim Fernalld, who has been serving with the Brookline Fire Department since 2019.
As a Security Engineer specializing in financial fraud, insider threat, and internet crimes in his day job, he's become a go-to resource for both emergency response and the technical challenges that arise in modern firefighting. Whether he's responding to calls, troubleshooting equipment, or researching current techniques in modern firefighting, Tim finds ways to leverage his technical expertise to support the team.
Throughout his time with the department, Tim has served as Firefighter and Lieutenant earning both his Proboard Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications and CDL-B. Tim has also attended multiple additional conferences, classes, and training to keep current with his skills. His problem-solving mindset and hands-on approach have made him an invaluable resource for the crew.
At home, Tim is a devoted husband and father. When he's not at the station, you might find him tackling home improvement projects, enjoying outdoor activities, or tinkering with 3D printing and electronics.
Fun fact: his birthday is also in December, so let’s give him some happy birthday wishes as well!
