Excessive Heat Watch Friday July 19 to Sunday July 21

Urgent Weather Message - National Weather Service Gray ME
330 AM EDT Thu Jul 18 2019

DANGEROUS HEAT AND HUMIDITY FRIDAY THROUGH THIS WEEKEND

A combination of very hot temperatures and subtropical moisture will lead to heat indices of 105 degrees or more on Saturday. Both Friday and Sunday will also be hot and humid, but to a lesser degree. A heat advisory may be issued later today for Friday.

If you need to beat the heat this weekend please visit either the Brookline library or the Brookline Community Room, both are air-conditioned facilities.
The Brookline Public Library will be open this Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. The library is located at 16 Main Street. The Community Room at the Public Safety Complex will be open this Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm. The Public Safety Complex is located at 3 Post Office Drive.

Extreme Heat
Extreme Heat often results in the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards. In most of the United States, extreme heat is defined as a long period (2 to 3 days) of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees.
In extreme heat, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. This can lead to death by overworking the human body.
Remember that:
• Older adults, children, and sick or overweight individuals are at greater risk from extreme heat.

IF YOU ARE UNDER AN EXTREME HEAT WARNING:
• Never leave a child, adult, or animal alone inside a vehicle on a warm day.
• Find places with air conditioning. Libraries, shopping malls, and community centers
• If you’re outside, find shade.
• Avoid strenuous activities.
• Watch for heat illness.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Check family members, and neighbors for signs of heat-related illness.
• Drink plenty of fluids.
