What is an e-bike?

Please review the flow-chart to determine if your child’s apparatus is an e-bike or an electric OHRV (Off-Highway Recreational Vehicle).

Electric OHRV’s fall under the same laws as their gas counterparts.
New Hampshire OHRV laws require all operators 12 and older to hold a valid driver's license or complete an approved safety education course. OHRV’s must be registered to ride off your own property, operators under 18 are required to wear a helmet, and operation on public ways is prohibited, unless in designated areas, for which there are none in the Town of Brookline.

🚲🛴 E-BIKES, SCOOTERS & OTHER PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION DEVICES 🚲🛴

With summer weather and the end of school approaching, we are all read receiving calls regarding e-bikes, electric scooters and the unsafe operation of regular bicycles.

The Brookline Police Department would like to advise residents that the Town of Brookline has an ordinance governing “the operation of Skateboards, Scooters, Roller Skates, In-Line Skates, and Other Vehicles and Devices Used for Recreation or Transportation for which no existing rules or laws prescribe their method of operation upon public roadways, sidewalks or parking lots in the Town of Brookline.”

This ordinance, established in 1994, applies to modern “Vehicles and Devices” such as electric scooters and e-bikes.

Under the ordinance:
✅ Operators must ride in a safe manner that does not endanger pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, or other users of public roadways and sidewalks.
✅ Operators must not obstruct or interfere with vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
✅ Operation should occur along the side of the roadway without impeding the normal flow of traffic.
✅ Operators are subject to the same general duties and responsibilities applicable to other users of the roadway.
🚫 No person shall operate these devices on a public roadway, sidewalk, or parking lot in Brookline between the hours of dusk and dawn.
⚠️ PENALTY FOR VIOLATION
A person found in violation of this ordinance may:
• Be charged with a violation under New Hampshire law.
• Be fined up to $100.
• Have the skateboard or other apparatus confiscated as provided by the ordinance.

Parents are encouraged to review these rules with their children and ensure that any e-bike, scooter, skateboard, or similar device is operated safely and responsibly.

The purpose of this ordinance is to promote the safe use of Brookline’s roadways, sidewalks, parking lots, and public spaces for everyone in our community.

Police Officer

The Brookline Police Department is accepting resumes for a full time Police Officer position.

The qualified candidate must be 21 years of age, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, valid driver’s license, U.S. citizenship, excellent communication/writing skills and the ability to meet current physical fitness requirements set forth by the NH Police Standards and Training Council.

Current certification preferred but not required. Non-certified candidates would be required to attend the 16-week NH PSTC Academy. Certification from out of state may be transferable upon passing the physical fitness requirements and passing the "New Hampshire Law Package" testing. Candidates will be required to successfully complete a rigorous hiring process.

The Brookline Police Department offers a competitive starting salary for certified Officers, commensurate with experience, currently between $70,990 and $78,921, with a top step salary of $93,412.80. Anthem Blue/Cross Blue Shield insurance split of 80/20, bi-weekly payout for declining insurance, FREE Delta Dental coverage for the employee, with optional family plans, compensatory time, clothing allowance, paid vacation (up to 4 weeks), 11 paid holidays, sick time buy back, education incentive, tuition reimbursement, NH Group 2 retirement and a hourly detail rate of $62.50.

Officers work 14 days a month, with every other Friday, Saturday, Sunday off, utilizing a 12-hour shift rotation.

Resumes will be accepted on a continuous basis and reviewed upon receipt. The process starts with a written test and physical fitness test based on NH Police Standards and Training entry level requirements. The written test is waived for certified candidates.

**Fi****ms training at the Transfer Station on June 8, 15 and 17, from 8a-4p.

Please note this is not a public event. We make every effort to be considerate of our neighbors and keep the community informed when fi****ms training activities are scheduled. Providing advance notice helps reduce unnecessary concern and gives residents the opportunity to plan for the temporary increase in noise.

Join us in congratulating Officer Jeffery Kanavos on graduating from the 202nd New Hampshire Police Standard and Training Academy! Officer Kanavos was hired in November of 2025 and spent just a couple weeks with us before heading off to complete the rigorous 16 week academy.

Officer Kanavos has demonstrated dedication, professionalism, and commitment throughout his training.

We are proud to welcome him back to the Department and look forward to seeing him serve and protect our community with integrity and pride. Congratulations, Officer Kanavos, welcome back!

Nice weather is upon us, and we’re seeing more people out riding their bikes around town.

A few quick reminders to help everyone stay safe:
• Wear a helmet
• Follow traffic laws and signals
• Ride in the same direction as traffic
• Use hand signals when turning
• Make sure you’re visible, especially in the evening
• Be alert and avoid distractions such as headphones or mobile devices

Please join us in welcoming your newest officer, Bryan Hanson.

Bryan recently moved to town and joins us as a certified officer with four years of experience.

Prior to policing, Bryan served five years in the Marine Corps as a military police officer.

Bryan was officially sworn in on 4/13 by Town Clerk Patti Howard-Barnett and pinned by his fiancé, Heather.

He will be in field training for the next couple of weeks before being released to solo status.
