HEADLINE:
At approximately 5:30 p.m. this evening, Brooklyn Center Police officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting in the 5600 block of Xerxes Avenue.
While officers were responding, they learned that four juvenile males believed to have been involved in the incident had fled the area. Two officers from outside law enforcement agencies were in a nearby parking lot conducting a prisoner exchange when they witnessed the shooting. Those officers pursued the individuals on foot and ultimately detained four juvenile males. One male is believed to be directly involved in the incident.
During the foot pursuit, officers observed one of the males conceal or discard an item in the area. A perimeter was established, and a K-9 team conducted an article search. A handgun equipped with an extended magazine was subsequently located. Officers also recovered six or more spent cartridge casings from the area.
One individual self-transported to a local hospital with injuries reported to be non-life threatening. At this time, that individual’s involvement in the incident has not been determined.
Brooklyn Center Police detectives and additional personnel were called in to assist with the investigation.
Initial information indicated that the incident may have involved an officer-involved shooting. No law enforcement officer discharged a fi***rm during this incident.
This remains an active investigation, and detectives are pursuing additional leads.
Brooklyn Center Police were assisted by the St. Louis Park Police Department, Brooklyn Park Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Metro Transit Police Department, crime laboratory personnel, Minnesota State Patrol aviation, and the Robbinsdale Police Department.
