Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the marked multi-use public trail systems in DEC Region 7 state forests. Over the last month, there has been an increasing problem with this at Shindagin Hollow. The Rangers have been notified. If you see illegal activity, please report it to the DEC Division of Law Enforcement 24 hour Dispatch center at 518-418-5850. Pictures and videos are helpful too and can be sent directly to the DEC Region 7 office. The Southern Tier has received a lot of rain this Spring, and current conditions leave the Shindagin trails susceptible to long-term damage. Please be good stewards and neighbors of our public recreational lands.

Looks like some good stewardship actions from our friends at Cycle-CNY. Take a minute to read and send a quick email to the Town of Caroline in support of these suggestions.

Earlier this month Cycle-CNY leadership attended a Town of Caroline board meeting. We presented a letter outlining a partnership for the Town of Caroline and Cycle-CNY to maintain access roads, public parking, and cleanliness around Shindagin Hollow state forest. The meeting went very well and there was an active discussion about the significance of bicycling at Shindagin Hollow state forest as well as on the Caroline area roads. We also presented a signed petition requesting vehicle speed limit signs on the roads approaching Braley Hill and Shindagin Hollow Roads.

We encourage our membership to contact the Town of Caroline Supervisor at [email protected] to express your support of our actions. Some template text is provided below for your convenience:

“I support Cycle-CNY’s motion to reduce speed limits on the area roadways around Shindagin Hollow State Forest in the Town of Caroline. I feel that the currently unposted roads, with a default speed limit of 55mph, are not in alignment with safe travel though residential neighborhoods and along forest access roads. I encourage the Town of Caroline and the NYS Department of Transportation to review these roads and post a speed limit more appropriate for safe travel. Thank you for your support.”

We hope to post a similar signature petition at Brookton’s Market in Brooktondale for the next couple weeks. Many thanks to those of you who can help us push these improvements forward!
