Scripture Rocks Heritage Park

The small vernal pond at the Scripture Rocks Heritage Park is a natural area where we teach environmental education programs to young students every year.

To our dismay, someone has been dumping large quantities of Koi fish in this small habitat, which is a death sentence for all of the insects and amphibian larvae in the pond. This is a vernal pond and will not support fish of any kind. We urgently ask whomever is doing this to STOP immediately.

As we speak, the fish are being removed, and since we are not in the fish-fostering business, they will most likely become a raccoon feast. It is illegal to stock this invasive fish, and we ask that anyone aware of who is dumping them please let us know. Your report will be anonymous.

JCHC 9th Annual Military Show June 1st. (See Event Poster below).

Our raffle prize this year is a replica of the 105th Pennsylvania Civil War Regiment’s “Wildcat” monument located at Gettysburg. This is a casting of the sculpture, authentic to the original monument, by renowned Gettysburg artist Gary Casteel. Pretty Cool! You can see this sculpture up close at the JCHC Gift Shop.

Tickets are only $5 each or 5 for $20. Raffle tickets may be purchased in advance at the History Center and are available by Paypal on our website, jchconline.org/events. We will fill out tickets for you and add to the hamster cage! Tix will also be sold at the show. The raffle drawing will be held at 3 PM, day of the show.

Have you seen the Pollinator Pond at the park? We've recently installed Chronolog.io - A time lapse photo project.

While you're out at the park, be sure to stop by the Photo Station and help us monitor the pond. Seasons, weather, wildlife, and all of the natural changes of the pond area. When you send in your photo, they will be uploaded in chronological order for everyone to see!

The Historical Marker Database promotes Scripture Rocks Park on their website with some great information and pictures. Check out the Veil-Lifting Rock.

”On December 31, 1912, I rose from bed and was at the spring getting water when the town clock struck two in the morning. I went to work uncovering the Veil-Lifting rock by the light of the lantern, and was busy almost continually at the work. It took about six days of hard work with clay pick, shovel, sledge, and dynamite to remove the covering of earth, growing saplings, rocks, etc., from the top of the Veil-Lifting.” -D.M. Stahlman

The park also includes the Port Barnett Rockshelter, a controlled archaeology dig conducted by North Fork Chapter 29 Excavation Project. Findings provided evidence of visitors at least 5,300 years ago.
