August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and it’s a great reminder of how people look out for one another right here in the community.

Before the measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, nearly every child caught it, leading to thousands of hospitalizations and hundreds of deaths every year. Thanks to the high level of vaccination in Broomfield and swift action from public health workers, the measles outbreak in Broomfield closed with ten total cases and no hospitalizations.

In areas like South Carolina and Texas, where vaccination rates and public health support are lower, these outbreaks reached counts in the hundreds. That is the power of “community immunity” (or herd immunity)—when people who can get vaccinated do, neighbors who can’t, like newborns or those undergoing cancer treatments, are protected.

Let’s keep the neighborhood safe and healthy as the school year begins. Take a quick look at your family’s records or reach out to BPHE’s clinic this month to see if you’re due for a booster!
