CERTIFIED DOESN’T MEAN COMPETENT.

A certificate is just a piece of paper if all you did was sit in a classroom, watch someone else demonstrate a skill, and then put the paperwork in a binder.

If you come back from training and never touch the skill again, what the hell was the point?

Papers on the wall don't save lives.
Certs in a binder don't make the grab.

Reps do. Discipline does. Experience does.

This job isn't one and done. You don't take a class, get a certificate, and suddenly become a pro.

You train.
You practice.
You screw it up.
You fix it.
You do it again.

Then you keep doing it until the skill is there when the s**t hits the fan.

The firefighter who keeps sharpening the craft will always be more valuable than the one who collects certificates and stops training.

Don't collect paper.

Build capability.

Incentives like this should be the standard everywhere for volunteers! - Montgomery County, Virginia, has approved a significant personal property tax incentive aimed at strengthening its volunteer fire and EMS system. Volunteers who contribute at least 200 hours annually will receive a reduced vehicle tax rate of $1 per $100 of assessed value, a 60% reduction from the standard $2.55 rate. County leaders hope the incentive will improve recruitment, retention, and volunteer engagement. The move comes as the county faces increasing demands from population growth and a declining volunteer workforce, prompting the hiring of 50 career emergency responders since 2021 and discussions about building three additional stations.
