Last month, members of the Brownsdale Volunteer Fire Department spent the evening training on vehicle extrication techniques. Vehicle extrication is the process of safely removing patients from heavily damaged vehicles after serious crashes, especially when doors, roofs, or other parts of the vehicle trap occupants inside.
During this training, our firefighters practiced:
🔥 Scene Size-Up
🔥 Vehicle Stabilization
🔥 Patient Access
🔥 Safe tool operations using hydraulic rescue tools, often referred to as the “Jaws of Life”
Training like this is incredibly important because every vehicle and every emergency scene presents different challenges. Newer vehicles are built with stronger materials and advanced safety features that can change how responders safely access and remove patients. Continuing to train hands-on helps our firefighters build confidence, sharpen their skills, and stay prepared to respond when people need help most.
