Congratulations to Brownstown firefighter Dillan Powell on completing the Illinois Fire Service Institute Basic Operations/Advanced Technician (BOF) Blended Firefighting Program in Marion.

Over the past 18 weeks, Dillan completed more than 200 hours of hands-on training, weekly online virtual learning sessions, assignments, quizzes, and ten practical training weekends. During the program, he also completed Courage to Be Safe, Resiliency Awareness, Opioid Awareness, and the online portion of Fire Service Vehicle Operator training.

This program prepares firefighters to meet the Job Performance Requirements associated with Illinois firefighter certification and requires a tremendous amount of time, dedication, and sacrifice. Dillan’s final step toward certification will be completion of 40 hours of Hazardous Materials Operations training over the next month.

We are proud of Dillan’s accomplishment and commitment to serving the Brownstown community.

I don’t use these kinds of terms lightly. Monday looks like one of the most concerning severe weather days I’ve ever had to cover. I hope for some sort of fly in the ointment of this setup, but barring that this event will have a pretty high ceiling with a tornado outbreak being possible.

Now is your time to go over your severe weather safety plan. Know what you and your family will do if a tornado warning is issued. Have a safety kit, etc.

Do not be scared, be prepared. Odds are you won’t be directly affected by a tornado. Most of us won’t. Even on the high end days this is the case. This is not me telling you the sky is falling or that it’s time to panic. But I won’t sugar coat it, Monday you need to be weather aware.

More updates when we get more info. I’m hoping that there’s a downtrend.

This is what’s left behind at the station when a fire call comes in—work boots from leaving their job, lounge shoes from leaving their family at home.

The people whose shoes are left behind aren’t just firefighters. They are husbands, wives, dads, moms, brothers, sisters, friends, and neighbors. They are the ones who drop everything when the pager goes off. The ones who sacrifice family time, birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, sleep, and countless other hours to be there for complete strangers when they need us most.

In the fire service, our number one goal is life safety—and that includes our lives, too.

At the end of every call, these shoes need to be filled again.

You can help us make that happen by having and practicing your emergency evacuation plan, slowing down and staying alert when driving through accident scenes, testing your smoke alarms regularly, and following fire prevention and safety tips.

With your help, we can make sure these shoes are filled again at the end of every call.
