Here's another old aerial for you! This is Brownstown in 1949! Some notable things you either might see, or might not see in this photo! ⬇️

1. The following did not exist yet in 1949, most of the areas for these were just farm fields back then: Jay-C Store, the current High School and Elementary School locations, Venus Acres, Lucas-Ackerman Addition, Wayman Addition, Lake Pyoca, Brownstown Electric Supply, & Brownstown Speedway.

2. The Brickyard, Kieffer Paper Mill, and Morgan Canning Company were in full force back then.

3. The Marion Kay Spices building is shown here, the same year that Marion K. (Bill) Summers moved the company to Brownstown. According to their website, the original vacant building was formerly the Thompson Sled Company, so that could be the building shown here before they started building on to expand the business of Marion K. Spices that is still in operation in Brownstown today!

4. The Courthouse lawn had significantly more trees back then!

A lot of changes shown here! These aerial photos we have here at the County Surveyor’s Office are 76 years apart! The City of Seymour has exploded with growth since then!

Here are some major things that are different on the 1949 aerial photo:

1. I-65, Community Drive, the current Seymour High School, Seymour Middle School, Wastewater Treatment Plant, and Schneck Medical Center all hadn’t been built yet.

2. You can still see the Stardust Drive-In towards the far east side.

3. The old Shields School is still shown next to the gym that is still standing.

4. Freeman Field was pretty empty of large buildings back then.

5. Sunset Parkway had just been developed and only had 7 houses in it. Crestview & Coventry Place hadn’t been built yet, even though they both surround Sunset Parkway today.

6. Leslie Lake hadn’t been built yet, but you can see County Road 275 N. still following the same path it does today.

How many cool differences can you find? These images will be uploaded separately in the comments section for you to save and zoom in and out of to inspect them throughly!

Attention trappers! We are looking for additional trappers to help us in removing an over population of beavers that are causing severe damage to our County legal drainage system. All locations must be approved and directed by the Jackson County Surveyors Office. The drainage board does pay a bounty per beaver. Contact our office for details.

It's great to see County offices working together for the betterment of our County. Thanks to the Jackson County Sheriff Department for keeping me and my crew safe today! Setting section corner monuments in highways can be a very dangerous job.
