During this past Tuesday's Cameron Commissioners' Court meeting, the Commission voted to approve the Fiscal Year 2026-2027 budget.

Among the $265 million budget is a 5% salary increase for all county employees along with 10% increase specifically for law enforcement, detention officers, and dispatchers.

In addition, the budget also includes $31.2 million more for funding of road and bridge infrastructure projects amongst other top priorities shared by county residents.

The budget was made possible without needing a tax increase, with the current tax rate staying the same from last year at $0.424393 per $100 valuation.

As we progress into the new school year, we’re proud to recognize two Brownsville ISD schools for achieving “Healthy Campus” status through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension!

Today, we presented proclamations to Sharp Elementary and Vermillion Road Elementary for their commitment to promoting healthy habits among students and families. From encouraging nutritious eating to collectively walking thousands of miles, these schools are helping make healthy choices a part of everyday life.

As students return to the classroom after a summer of outdoor fun, we hope these healthy habits continue throughout the school year, helping our kids stay active, healthy, and focused on their studies.

Congratulations to these schools and their students, families, and staff for leading the way toward a healthier community!

Today during Commissioners’ Court, we honored the life and career of Dr. Romeo Montalvo and his 48 years of dedicated service as a pediatrician in our community.

At a time when the need for physicians continues to grow, Dr. Montalvo’s remarkable career is a testament to the lasting impact one dedicated physician can have. His legacy lives on not only through the countless children he cared for, but through the generations of families who grew up knowing his kindness, compassion, and commitment to caring for the children of our community.

We are grateful for Dr. Montalvo’s 48 years of service and for the lasting mark he has left on Cameron County!

Today, during Commissioners Court, we had the privilege of recognizing Robert Lopez on his retirement after an extraordinary 42-year career in law enforcement and public service. Chief Lopez most recently served the City of Port Isabel as Chief of Police for the past 10 years. Throughout his distinguished career, he also proudly served the residents of Cameron County as the elected Constable for Precinct No. 4 and as Chief Deputy Constable for Precinct No. 2. His unwavering dedication, leadership, and commitment to protecting our communities have left a lasting impact on Cameron County and the people he has served.

In addition, today the Commissioners’ Court approved the placement of signage at county-owned facilities to bring awareness to su***de prevention. Cameron County is proud to support this effort by helping raise awareness of the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, including the Press 1 option dedicated to Veterans. These signs serve as a reminder that hope is always available and that confidential, compassionate support is just a phone call or text away, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 and Press 1 to connect with caring professionals who are ready to help.
