📞 Community Update

We are experiencing an unusually high call volume today and have exhausted all funding for March.

At this time, we are unable to provide additional financial assistance.

Every call matters, and this is incredibly difficult to say. We will continue connecting individuals to any available resources.

💙 If you’re able to give, your support helps us respond when needs surge like this.

• Veterans

All assistance is based on household size and income eligibility.

đź’šYou Decide Where Hope Grows

At Brown County Home Solutions, every dollar makes a difference — but this month, you get to choose where it goes.

When we say “Covering Essentials,” we mean helping families pay critical bills — like utilities or other urgent expenses that keep households stable and prevent small setbacks from becoming major crises.

With the government shutdown affecting so many low-income households, our goal is to free up resources so families can stay secure and meet their basic needs through uncertain times.

đź’ˇ Where would you want your donation to go?
👉 Covering essentials
👉 Housing deposits
👉 Housing assistance and job readiness
👉 Wherever it’s needed most

Our last post got a lot of engagement - for good reason.

That experience isn’t rare — it’s real life for so many of our neighbors right here in Brown County.

In Texas, over 60% of adults receiving public assistance are working, yet still can’t afford basic necessities. When paychecks stop or benefits are delayed, what do you do?

With the government shutdown affecting families across Texas, many will turn to local support programs just to get by. That’s why Brown County Home Solutions is launching a November fundraising campaign — to expand our Community Assistance Program and help families stay safe, housed, fed and hopeful through the weeks ahead.

đź’™ Every dollar helps keep the lights on, the water running, and hope alive right here at home.

Please watch for the November 1 Fundraising launch!

You’re a single parent working full time…
$15 an hour, 40 hours a week, you bring home around $1,800 a month after taxes.

Your basic necessity bills:
-$1,100 rent
- $175 electric
- $130 water
- $280 car payment
- $120 insurance

That’s $1,675 gone before you even think about groceries, gas kid’s lunch money, or cellphone.

You’re getting by, barely. Then your daughter gets strep throat. You miss a week of work to take care of her and now your paycheck is short by $300.

The rent check bounces. The landlord adds a $75 late fee.
You make a partial payment, but by the time your next check comes, you’re already behind again.

Now you’re facing eviction.
You pack your things into your car and move in with a friend for a bit but she can only let you stay for a few weeks.

You try to get a new place, but every application wants a $50 fee and a clean rental record.
You don’t have either.

So you start living out of your car. Your child does homework in the backseat with a flashlight.
You shower at the gym, eat sandwiches and try to keep hope alive.

But one day, someone calls the cops about a “suspicious vehicle” in the parking lot.
Next thing you know, CPS is involved and everything you’ve fought to hold together falls apart.

And it all started with one missed paycheck.

We walk past people in these situations every single day.
They’re not lazy. They’re not broken.
They’re doing their best in a system designed for them to fail.

So before you judge, remember you’re one unexpected bill, one illness, one broken down car away from being in the exact same position.

99% of us are way closer to homelessness than we are to being rich.

Stay humble. Be kind. Be grateful. And be careful with thinking “that could never happen to me”. ❤️

“🌍 Some days it feels like democracy is being chipped away, and too often the most vulnerable are left without a voice. But there are still moments where compassion and common sense shine through. ✨

📜 SB 2488 / HB 636 is one of those moments. This bipartisan bill will create a statewide homeless data-sharing network — a tool that helps service providers, healthcare workers, and community organizations connect people to the right resources before they slip through the cracks. 🤝

It’s not about politics. It’s about humanity. ❤️ It’s about making sure our neighbors aren’t forgotten in the noise of division.

At BCHS, we believe that every act of coordination, every connection made, and every resource shared is a small act of democracy in action: people caring for people. đź’ˇ

Even in hard times, hope finds a way forward. 🌅

We know it’s been a little quiet here on our page. 💙 That’s because our team has been focused on boots-on-the-ground work—helping neighbors with housing support, utility assistance, and essential services.

But while we’re working here at home, Texas lawmakers have been busy too. 🏛️ Several bills passed this session could deeply affect homelessness in our state. Some will help our communities, others will hurt them:

âś… Bills that Help
• SB 2488 → Statewide data-sharing system to better coordinate homelessness services.
• SB 399 → Biennial audits to track service efficiency and impact.

❌ Bills that Hurt
• SB 1164 → Involuntary detainment for mental illness, even without immediate danger.
• SB 2623 → Bans services within 1,500 feet of schools.
• SB 241 → Stricter homeless camp ban (expected to return).

As we continue our hands-on work in Brown County, we’ll also keep you updated on policies that could shape the future for our unhoused neighbors.

✊ Stay tuned as we break down each bill in the coming weeks—and join us in saying:
