BHPD is looking for bike helmet donations for Patrol Officers to hand out to riders in our community. BHPD will be organizing in the future a bike riders safety course for children to attend teaching them the laws and best practices. We will keep you posted on the date.

E-Bike Regulations in Ohio – Know Before You Ride!
Ohio law recognizes three classes of electric bicycles:
πŸ”Ή Class 1 E-Bike β€’ Pedal-assist only β€’ Motor assists only while pedaling β€’ Assistance stops at 20 MPH
πŸ”Ή Class 2 E-Bike β€’ Equipped with a throttle β€’ Motor can provide assistance without pedaling β€’ Assistance stops at 20 MPH
πŸ”Ή Class 3 E-Bike β€’ Pedal-assist only β€’ Assistance stops at 28 MPH β€’ Rider must be at least 16 years old β€’ Helmet required for both operators and passengers
Where Can E-Bikes Be Operated?
βœ… Public roadways (except limited-access highways and interstates)
βœ… Class 1 and Class 2 E-Bikes are generally permitted on bike lanes, side paths, and shared-use paths unless restricted by local ordinance.
⚠️ Class 3 E-Bikes are generally prohibited on shared-use paths that are not adjacent to a roadway unless specifically authorized.
❌ E-Bikes should not be ridden on trails primarily intended for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, or other natural-surface recreational trails unless specifically permitted.
Sidewalk Use
Ohio law allows bicycles and E-Bikes on sidewalks when the motor is not engaged, although local municipalities may adopt more restrictive regulations.
Important Safety Reminders:
πŸͺ– Helmets are strongly recommended for all riders and are required by law for Class 3 riders and passengers.
🚦 E-Bike operators must obey traffic laws just like traditional bicyclists.
πŸ’‘ When riding at night, E-Bikes must be equipped with proper lights and reflectors as required by Ohio law.
Relevant Ohio Revised Code Sections:
πŸ“– Ohio Revised Code 4511.522 – Electric Bicycles
Defines permitted use of Class 1, 2, and 3 E-Bikes
Establishes age and helmet requirements
Addresses where E-Bikes may be operated and associated penalties for violations.
πŸ“– Ohio Revised Code 4511.01
Defines Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric bicycles.
πŸ“– Ohio Revised Code 4511.52 & 4511.55
Applies bicycle traffic laws to E-Bikes and outlines roadway operating requirements.
Ohio Laws
As always, ride responsibly, be visible, wear a helmet, and share the road safely with others.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rittman Police Department and the Rittman community as they mourn the loss of one of their police officers in an overnight shooting. This is a stark reminder of the risks all our law enforcement officers make everyday to help keep our communities safe.
