June is National PTSD Awareness Month. Firefighters face traumatic events that can leave lasting impacts long after the emergency is over. Statistics show that more than 1 in 5 firefighters meet the criteria for a PTSD diagnosis, and more than 100 firefighters die by su***de each year.

This month, take the time to check in on your brothers and sisters in the fire service. Peer support, open conversations, and looking out for one another can make a difference.

Resources and training are available through the 100 Club of Illinois, Illinois Fire Service Institute, and the First Responder Center for Excellence. If you need help, seek culturally competent care that understands the unique challenges first responders face.

To kick off mental health awareness month, 15 PIO designees came together to recognize the importance of recognizing cumulative stress, advocating for needs, and finding the right support system. Participants acknowledged the unique stressors PIOs face and brainstormed ways to approach leadership and continue the conversation. Mental health isn't one size fits all, what matters most is taking the first step.
