Scouts - little did we know that the events that happened on this day, 25 years ago, would change our lives forever. Soon enough, a Warning Order would be issued, stop loss would be implemented and all leave would be canceled. We prepared for our deployment with a CALFEX in Grafenwoehr a long FTX in Hohenfels. The only thing we didn't have was a deployment date - which would come soon enough...

A quarter century ago, after Saddam Hussein's Iraqi army successfully invaded and took over the tiny Persian Gulf nation of Kuwait, President George H.W. Bush famously drew a line in the sand against Iraqi aggression.

Don't mess with Texas....a Texas veteran that is. Veteran=1, Robber=0. Concealed carry works, and to quote the neighbor, "This is our neighborhood and I just want to say thank you". And we here at the 3/8 Cav - Scout Platoon thank you too!

Staff Sgt. Carter is a true American hero. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the 2009 battle of Combat Outpost Keating in Afghanistan. He is the second Cav Scout from COP Keating to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Eight HERO'S were lost and many were wounded during this six-hour battle. Our congratulation to SSG Carter! SCOUTS OUT!

Cavalry Scout to Recieve the Medal of Honor on 26 August

SSG Carter will receive the Medal of Honor during a ceremony at the White House, Aug. 26, for his courageous actions while deployed to the Nuristan Province, Afghanistan, in October 2009. He was a cavalry scout assigned to 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, out of Fort Carson, Colo., during his first of two deployments to Afghanistan.

On Oct. 3, 2009, more than 400 anti-Afghan forces attempted to take over Combat Outpost Keating. Carter, who was a specialist at the time, and his fellow Soldiers defended the small combat outpost against rocket-propelled grenades and heavy weapons fire coming from the surrounding hills. Of the 54 members who defended the position, eight Soldiers were killed and more than 25 were injured.

During the more than six-hour battle, Carter found himself resupplying Soldiers with ammunition, providing first aid, killing enemy combatants and risking his own life to save that of his fellow Soldier, Spc. Stephan L. Mace, who was wounded and pinned down under enemy fire, according to Carter's award narrative.

Scouts Out!

05/17/2013

22 years ago on this date, 17 May 1991, most (not all) of the 3/8 Cav Scout platoon boarded a chartered flight from Saudi Arabia to Frankfurt, Germany (FRG). A handful of the Scouts stayed behind to attend to gear, etc. But for most of us, we were finally headed back to our duty station after 6 months of participation in Operation Desert Shield (Defense of Saudi Arabia), Operation Desert Storm (Liberation of Kuwait) and the Southwest Asia Cease-Fire Operation (refugee operation beginning on 12 April 1991). Participation in these three operations earned the 3/8 Cav Scout platoon three campaign stars that are worn on the Southwest Asia Service Medal/ribbon. Also, on 1 September 1992 an Overseas Service Bar (uniform hash mark on right sleeve) was authorized for service in the Persian Gulf for a period of at least 6 months (partial months counted as a whole month and 3/8 Cav was deployed from December 1990 until May 1991 = 6 months). In addition, 3/8 Cav was subsequently awarded the Valorous Unit Award under General Orders No. 14 dated 11 April 1997.

Scouts Out.
