For our training this month we went out to the stone quarry and practiced using our turbo draft. Using the turbo draft and a 150’ stretch of 5” hose and 2 1/2” hose we have access to basically unlimited amount of water for a tanker fill site. The elevation change and distance posed some difficulties, but we were able to flow the deck gun sufficiently to simulate filling a tanker. On flatter ground we should be able to go further and make once in accessible water sources available.

For EMS week we would like to show appreciation to our local Jay County EMS! We’re glad to work with them and we can’t show them enough appreciation. We also want to thank our own members who have gotten EMR and EMT certifications!

A few of our members were able to get together with Jay County Emergency Management to put on the latest tabletop exercise for the county. It was a great experience for the personnel doing the planning and for the ones that participated as responders in the tabletop.

This past weekend, Jay County first responders came together for a tabletop exercise focused on a hazardous materials transportation incident. These exercises allow agencies to coordinate response efforts, review and refine emergency plans, and strengthen communication in a controlled environment.

Training opportunities like this are essential to maintaining preparedness for emergencies that may not happen every day, but require a coordinated and effective response when they do occur.

This exercise was created and facilitated by Jay County Emergency Management staff and members of the Bryant Volunteer Fire Department.

We appreciate the responders who took time on a Saturday to participate including Bryant Volunteer Fire Department, Dunkirk Fire Department, Jay County Sheriff's Office, Portland Police Department, Pennville Fire Department, Salamonia Volunteer Fire Department, City of Portland Fire Department, Jay County EMS, Portland Professional Fire Fighters Local 5356, and IU Health Ball, Blackford & Jay.

Thank you to everyone who participated and continues to help keep our communities prepared and safe.

Thank you to everybody that came to our breakfast to support us! We had a great turn out and you kept us busy all morning! Thank you to Mallory Hudson our District 8B Miss Flame for coming to help us serve food! She was a great help and not only was able to help dish out the pancakes better than we could but was also able to put up with our joking around and sarcasm and was able to dish that out better. We had a fun morning and can’t wait for next years!

🚨 PUBLIC NOTICE – BRYANT FIRE DEPARTMENT 🚨
Earlier this morning at approximately 4:00 AM, a motor vehicle accident occurred on IN 67 between 550 E and 650 E in Wabash Township. Since then, many community members have reached out asking why the Bryant Fire Department did not respond. We want to provide clarity and ensure everyone has accurate information.
The Bryant Fire Department was not notified of this emergency by the Jay County Sheriff Dispatch Center, nor were we requested for mutual aid by the responding Adams County units. Because we were never alerted, we were unaware of the incident as it occurred and unable to respond.
At this time, we do not have all the details regarding how the call was dispatched or the severity of the incident.
What we can confirm:
• Wabash Township’s western boundary is CR 550 E.
• Fire protection and emergency services are contracted as follows:
• Bryant Fire Department covers all areas south of IN 67
• Geneva Fire Department covers all areas north of IN 67
• Mutual aid agreements are in place with all neighboring departments; however, mutual aid must be requested by the department managing the incident.
• Ongoing discussions between Jay County Fire Chiefs and the Jay County Sheriff’s Department are exploring automatic aid activations for certain types of emergencies to help prevent similar situations in the future.
In short: We could not respond to an incident we were never made aware of.
We extend a sincere THANK YOU to everyone who reached out with concerns and support. The Bryant Fire Department remains fully committed to serving and protecting the residents of Jay County, our surrounding communities, and all who travel through our great Jay County.

We were able to attend another great training this morning at Portland Municipal Airport. We may not have the airport in our protection area but there is a chance of a plane or helicopter accident to happen anywhere in our area. Thank you to everybody that came to present to us today to further educate the responders of our community. Being able to get plans like these together now before an emergency and work together will make us a stronger team in the future. Also thanks to L5356 for providing the delicious food for us!

We are glad to be apart of these meeting and help make plans to mitigate the hazards that are most likely to affect the community. Another step in the right direction to make our protection area and Jay County as a whole a safer place!

Last week, Jay County held the first of two meetings to update the county’s Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan.

These planning meetings are an important step in identifying and ranking the hazards and risks facing Jay County and our communities. Participants also work together to discuss mitigation actions that can help prevent or lessen the impacts of future disasters. By planning ahead, we’re building a safer and more resilient county for everyone.

Once the updated plan is approved by planning participants, each community — along with Jay County — will formally adopt the plan.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires representation from each incorporated city and town within Jay County, as well as representation from unincorporated areas of the county, to ensure all voices are included in the planning process.

We would also like to thank Marathon Pipe Line, LLC for providing a delicious meal for those attending the meeting, as well as for responders on duty and Grandma’s Favorites for preparing and delivering. Your support is greatly appreciated!

We appreciate the participation and collaboration of our local leaders and community members as we continue this important work.
