Ross Sanders House

Ross Sanders House A rear addition and carport were added in 1970. In 2024, the Michigan Gateway Community Foundation purchased the property as their next headquarters.

The Ross-Sanders House is an iconic historic structure located at 107 West Front Street, which is part of a Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places, under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The building consists of a central two-story Greek Revival structure erected around 1856 with two wings later remodeled in the Second Empire style, and a rear wing now

containing jail cells. The City acquired the building in 1948 and remodeled it for city offices, the library, and the police department. As a partnership between the foundation, the City of Buchanan and The Buchanan Preservation Society; the Ross Sanders House will undergo a historical renovation to bring it back to it's former glory. A preservation easement will also be completed to ensure the property remains an icon for the community for good, forever.

As we prepare to move to our new headquarters this holiday season, we are asking for donations of Christmas decor for both inside and outside of the historic Ross Sanders House. If you have anything we can use, please drop it off at 111 Days Avenue this Monday or Tuesday from 9am-5pm. Our wish list includes, Christmas trees, greenery, garlands, wreaths, lighting, ribbons, bows and ornaments.

Come to the ribbon cutting at 11:30am, tour our building and then come celebrate the re-opening of our downtown. Let's celebrate the start of a new chapter together.

Friday is a special day in Buchanan. The streets will re-open after a summer/fall of construction. The City of Buchanan Michigan will be hosting their ribbon cutting at 10:30am at the corner of Days and Front. After that, a short parade will take place that ends at the Ross Sanders House, which will host it's own ribbon cutting at 11:30am. From 3-6pm the town will be bustling with street buskers that include local legend Don Savoie and Hank Nelson - The Singin' Gritter. There will also be an open jam at Mill Alley. All with fire pits to stay warm! Let's all celebrate a new chapter for our community.

Thanks Buchanan Scarecrow Charities for a great addition to The Ross Sanders House.

Some updates - New roof was completed on the back of the building and jail cell corridor. AC and electrical work continues. Some fascia and soffit work completed. Lots of progress!

Hello Buchanan! We want to thank everyone for their patience with all of the construction in town. We would like to remind people that the Ross Sanders House is an active construction site. We’ve been having issues with vehicles cutting through the parking lot to access Oak Street and this endangers our construction team and fire department. We know the road construction can be frustrating, but if you could please be courteous with the parking lot we would greatly appreciate it. If you are parking in the lot, please just be cognizant of the workers as well.
