Even though the Buckeye Valley Museum is closed for the season, the work never stops!

Our newest volunteer has been keeping very busy behind the scenes. Between digging for arrowheads, filling out catalog cards, studying old books, and helping with research projects, this little dinosaur skeleton is doing everything he can... despite those tiny arms!

While we're away on our summer adventures, you'll still find us helping out at the Buckeye Public Library and cheering on all of our Summer Reading participants. Every reader who joins the adventure earns rewards for their efforts—and this year's grand finale is going to be ROAR-some!

All Summer Reading participants will receive an exclusive invitation to our End-of-Summer Party, which will be DINOSAUR THEMED this year!

🔍 Storage Vault Tour

Here’s a little sneak peek inside our prehistoric collection storage area at the museum. This photo features part of our Hohokam pottery collection — fragile pieces that have survived for centuries and continue to connect us to Buckeye’s earliest history.

While many of these artifacts are too delicate to be displayed publicly, they remain an important part of preserving and sharing the stories of the people and cultures who came before us. Every piece helps us better understand life in the Southwest long before modern Buckeye existed.

📬 to Buckeye’s very first post office!

Buckeye’s first post office opened in 1888, right alongside the Buckeye Canal that helped bring life and growth to the Valley. The post office was named “Buckeye” after the canal itself — a name chosen in honor of Ohio, the “Buckeye State,” by canal builder Malin M. Jackson.

The town was originally platted as “Sidney,” but residents continued calling the community Buckeye because of the canal and post office. By 1910, the name Buckeye officially stuck.

Even more remarkable, Buckeye’s very first postmistress was Cora Jane Clanton, daughter of pioneer settler Thomas Clanton. From this small frontier post office, letters and news connected Buckeye’s early settlers to the rest of the world.

It’s amazing to think how one small post office helped shape the identity of the city we know today. 📮

June is Dairy Month, and we’re celebrating the cows and dairy families that helped shape the Buckeye Valley’s agricultural history. Long before modern grocery stores and refrigerated trucks, local dairy farmers worked tirelessly through early mornings and desert heat to provide fresh milk, cream, and butter to growing Arizona communities. These hardworking farms not only nourished families but also played an important role in building Buckeye’s economy and way of life. Lets recognize the gentle animals and dedicated people behind these traditions. At the museum, we are proud to preserve the artifacts, photographs, and stories that honor Buckeye’s farming heritage and help us better understand daily life in our town’s past. 🐄🥛 Do you remember local dairies in Buckeye or have family stories connected to dairy farming? It once belonged to Dr. Evans of Palo Verde, a dedicated physician who made house calls across the region. In 1896, while on his way to help a patient, Dr. Evans tragically lost his life in an accident. He is remembered as the first person laid to rest in the Palo Verde Cemetery.
