Four-Way Stop Activation at A Street and Main Street!

The City of Buckley will convert the intersection of A Street and Main Street into a four-way stop-controlled intersection. Following a traffic engineering study and increased public feedback regarding safety, the Mayor and Buckley City Council officially approved this traffic control modification at its August 2026 meeting. The new four-way stop signs will be activated on Sunday, September 6th.

Why This Change is Necessary:

The modification follows a formal evaluation initiated in April 2025. The intersection was reviewed using standards from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Design Manual. This included analyzing the intersection’s crash history, sight distance safety, traffic volumes, and other operational factors. The evaluation recommended the change based on two primary safety criteria:

• Sight Distance Constraints: The study identified limited visibility conditions at the intersection. Forcing all approaches to stop mitigates these existing sight-distance hazards and prevents cross-traffic collisions.

• Pedestrian Safety: High pedestrian volumes at this location. The four-way stop configuration simplifies the driver’s right-of-way, reducing conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians.

We encourage all motorists and pedestrians to use extra caution and remain attentive as our community adjusts to the new traffic patterns.

Reminder on Four-Way Stops:
Under Washington State law, motorists approaching a four-way stop must yield the right-of-way to the vehicle that arrived and stopped first. If vehicles arrive simultaneously, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right. Drivers must always yield to pedestrians crossing the roadway.
