Seatco Prison Site

Seatco Prison Site The historical Seatco Prison was in operation in Bucoda, WA from 1874 to 1887, known as "Hell on Ear No structures of the old prison remain at this location.

"Seatco" (See-at-koe) is the Native word for "ghost or devil" or "ghost or devil place"... The prison itself was known as "Hell on Earth" (as noted by George France, among the last to leave on May 10, 1887). A memorial is all that still stands.

Info from Washington GenWeb Project:

Bucoda was originally called Seatco, an Indian word meaning "devil".

The town was the site of the first territorial prison, 1874-88. Prisoners worked adjacent coal mines owned by J.M. Buckley, Samuel Coulter, and John B. David. To avoid name confusion with Seattle, the three men coined a new name by using the first two letters of their surnames -- Bu-Co-Da. The railroad adopted the name in 1874, the state in 1890.

Forest Grove Cemetery is located in Tenino, WA. It's just a short drive from the Bucoda, WA site of the former Seatco Prison. It is rumored to be the final resting spot for many Seatco prisoners. There is even a very spooky rumor that an unmarked mass grave full of Seatco prisoners is located in the woods towards the back of the cemetery. This is completely unconfirmed, but worth noting...

We investigated the site of the former Seatco Prison (what is left of it) in September of 2009. Seatco comes from the native word for "ghost" or "devil" or "ghost or devil place." Eventually the city was renamed Bucoda because Seatco had some fairly negative connotations.
