Can you identify Poison Hemlock and Wild Parsnip? If not, you need to take a moment to read the OSU Extension Buckeye Yard & Garden Online article by Joe Boggs in the link below. These biennial, non-native plants are both frequently found across Crawford County and both are just plain old nasty! Poison Hemlock is one the deadliest plants in North America and all parts (leaves, stem, seed and root) are poisonous and can cause respiratory failure and death. Wild Parsnip is not as lethal but contact with this plant can cause severe blistering about 24-72 hours after exposure that can last for months.
The OSU Extension article has excellent photos showing all stages of both plants -- and the two plants are often found growing together. Be sure you can identify them prior to getting out the mowers and string trimmers to avoid spraying sap and putting yourself at risk. No one should have intimate images, sexual deepfakes, or fake nudes shared without their consent. The TAKE IT DOWN Act enacted in May 2025 requires platforms to remove intimate photos or videos posted without consent. The TAKE IT DOWN Act makes it a federal crime to knowingly share or threaten to share non-consensual intimate images (NCII), including AI-generated images that depict real people and child sexual abuse material (children and adolescents under the age of 18). RAINN has created a 5-Step Guide that explains what to do - how to report to platforms, how to preserve evidence, how and when to file an FTC complaint, and how to get support. ☀️ SUN SAFETY ALERT FOR CRAWFORD COUNTY ☀️
The sunshine is back, and so are higher UV levels!
📅 UV Index Forecast for Bucyrus:
• Wednesday: UV Index 9 (Very High)
• Thursday: UV Index 9 (Very High)
A UV Index of 9 means unprotected skin can burn quickly, often in as little as 20 minutes during peak sun hours.
🧴 Protect yourself and your family:
✅ Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) before going outdoors
✅ Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating
✅ Wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays
✅ Use a wide-brimmed hat and lightweight protective clothing
✅ Seek shade between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. when UV rays are strongest
✅ Remember that children and infants are especially vulnerable to sun damage
🚗 Never leave children, older adults, or pets in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.
Enjoy the beautiful weather safely and protect your skin today for a healthier tomorrow!

Crawford County Public Health inspects all public pools & public splash pads with recirculating water, including those at the city parks, YMCA, hotels, and campgrounds, to make sure they are as clean and safe as possible. The inspections include water chemistry (pH, alkalinity, chorine levels, etc.), water clarity, facility cleanliness & safety, pump room equipment, pool operator knowledge, reviewing that all lifeguards have completed their required trainings/certifications, and more. We are happy to report that the health inspectors have completed their opening inspections, all went well, and the pools & splash pads in Crawford County are ready for the warm days ahead. Happy, safe swimming!

Later this month we will be celebrating Father's Day and all the great things our Dads do for us. Just like it's not easy being a Mom, it's not easy being a Dad! But to all those Dads out there - we want you to know we see you and we are grateful for what you do for your families. Fatherhood is about presence, not perfection. Your role as a dad evolves, but the foundation is always love and support. Small, intentional moments become lifelong memories. Your actions teach more than your words—lead with integrity. Fatherhood is worth celebrating—at every stage. June is our month to celebrate all of the Dads in our lives and how much we appreciate all that they do.

Yesterday, at the end of our day, we celebrated the well-deserved retirement for two of our finest - Mary Coleman (23 years) & Vicki Hartschuh (31 years). Thank you for the incredible impact you’ve made through WIC. Your kindness, patience, and dedication have helped generations of families in Bucyrus and throughout Crawford County live healthier lives.
You didn’t just teach nutrition — you made fruits and vegetables fun, approachable, and something families could truly enjoy. Because of you, many children learned that carrots can be crunchy treasures and broccoli doesn’t have to be the enemy. Your knowledge, humor, and caring spirit will be greatly missed by coworkers and families alike. Thank you for sharing your talents, mentoring others, and helping our community grow healthier one fruit and veggie at a time.
Wishing you a retirement filled with relaxation, laughter, fresh gardens, sweet summer produce, and all the happiness you deserve!

The 2025 Annual Report of Infectious Diseases represents an overview of the prevalence of confirmed, probable, and suspected reportable diseases within Crawford County. Using the Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS) and REDCap, health departments monitor the health of the community, investigate how individuals became ill, provide education to those ill, and assist medical providers in the treatment and management of these contagious diseases. Note - beginning October 1, 2025, the state of Ohio changed the COVID-19 and Respiratory Syncytial
Virus (RSV) reporting to only report hospitalized cases and not individual cases.
