This month, the WIC Chicks of Crawford County have been celebrating Breastfeeding Awareness Month (BAM) in so many special ways!

We were honored to help with the "Celebrating Your Breastfeeding Journey" event at Avita Galion Hospital, we partnered with Avita to host the "24th Annual Baby Shower", and- just as we do all year long- continued supporting moms with their breastfeeding questions, concerns, and needs. 💟

But our support doesn't end when August does! We want every mom who is breastfeeding, combination feeding, pumping, or working toward their breastfeeding goals to know that we support you and we are cheering you on!

A few years ago, the Crawford County WIC Clinic was blessed to have a Dolly Parton Imagination Library bookcase and reading space created in our waiting area.

It has become such a special little corner of our office-a place where children can look at books, flip through colorful pages, and most importantly, enjoy special moments while their parents read to them.

Today, we honor the incredible legacy of Dolly Parton- her dedication to children and families and her advocacy of early literacy. We are so grateful for her kindness, generosity, love for humanity, and her belief that every child deserves opportunities to grow up with the joy of reading. Her heart for children and all of her passion for helping others has touched so many lives, including the families we serve right here in Crawford County.

We are proud to be a small part of the Imagination Library legacy!

We have a policy at our office that allows our WIC staff to participate in an Infant at Work Program so they can bring their infant to work with them until he/she is 6 months old. (Of course there are specific guidelines and procedures for participants in the program and we'd be happy to share our policies with any business interested.) Pictured today is Melissa, one of our WIC Nutritionists that meets with families to help assess dietary needs, help develop healthy eating plans, monitor growth, and guide clients in choosing nutritious foods. Melissa is not just an amazing co-worker, she's an amazing Mom too! After having three boys, she finally has a little girl! Beautiful Clara is almost 2 months old already and is a perfect sweetheart!
We have found that the infants that come to work with their parents are actually very happy babies that seldom cry. By remaining close to their parent the babies form deeper emotional bonds, receive consistent direct breastfeeding which also helps improve their immune health, build better socialization skills due to the various sights, sounds & interactions at the office, and experience reduced separation anxiety since the parent will typically transition gradually to utilizing daycare. Plus, it saves the parent substantial daycare costs for those months! (And we benefit by getting in a "baby fix" throughout the day.) Feel free to reach out if you would like more information on our Infant at Work program.

This Friday, we will recognize and celebrate the retirements of two dedicated Crawford County WIC employees whose years of service have made a lasting impact on our program and community.

Vicki Hartschuh (pictured on the left) has faithfully served Crawford County WIC since 1995 as our welcoming, dependable, and compassionate clerk. Mary Coleman (pictured on the right), our registered dietitian, has been an invaluable member of our team since 2003, providing exceptional nutritional guidance and support to countless families throughout the years.

Together, Vicki and Mary have positively influenced the lives of thousands of women, infants, and children through their commitment, professionalism, and genuine care for the families we serve. Their dedication to improving the health and well-being of our WIC participants has been truly remarkable.

We are deeply grateful for their many years of hard work and service, and we extend our sincere appreciation for all they have contributed to Crawford County WIC. We wish both Vicki and Mary a fulfilling, relaxing, and well-deserved retirement as they begin this exciting new chapter.
