Message from the Chief of Police to the Young People Involved in Violent Crime

Dear Young People,

I want to speak directly to you today. I understand that many of you may be struggling with feelings of hopelessness, anger, or frustration, and I know that the streets can sometimes seem like the only place where you can feel strong or protected. But I need you to understand that choosing violence and carrying a weapon is not the way forward. This path doesn’t just harm others—it harms you, your future, and your community.

Every act of violence, every shot fired, threatens the safety of our neighborhood and the lives of your peers. You may think it gives you power, but it only leads to pain, destruction, and regret. The truth is, real strength comes from making the right choices and building trust with those around you.

It’s not too late to change course. There are programs, mentors, and resources that are here to help you find a better way. Your future is still in your hands, and there are people who care about you and want to see you thrive, not just survive. The decisions you make now can either build the foundation for a better tomorrow or lead you down a path of destruction.

I urge you to stop, think, and take a step back. The path of violence is not the answer. You are capable of much more than this, and there is always another way—one that leads to success, peace, and safety.

We are watching, and we will hold those accountable who choose violence over peace. But it doesn’t have to be that way for you. You can choose a future of opportunity, safety, and hope. Take that first step toward change. It’s not too late.

Sincerely,
Chief Reggie Cain
