The holiday season is the most dangerous time of year for cardiac emergencies. Stress, cold weather and seasonal indulgence increase strain on the heart, with Christmas Eve seeing a significant rise in heart-related incidents.

Heart symptoms are often ignored to avoid disrupting holiday gatherings, but delaying care can be life threatening. Symptoms may be subtle and should always be taken seriously.

Call 911 immediately if you or someone near you experiences any of the following.

• Chest discomfort or pressure
• Shortness of breath
• Nausea or lightheadedness
• Racing or irregular heartbeat
• Sudden collapse or unresponsiveness

If a person collapses, begin CPR and use an AED if available until help arrives. Early action can significantly improve survival.

Do not wait and do not drive yourself. When in doubt, call 911 at the first sign of heart trouble and encourage loved ones to do the same.

It's always a great day when we get to be out in the community, engaging with our fellow neighbors, and hosting show-and-tells for our youngest generation! The smiles and curiosity never get old! Brad Moore and Ana Younes were our on-site crew for this latest school demonstration event.

We're proud to be able to give back to our county in this way.

Here's a look at our crews training on our new Powerload Systems which are nearly complete in the installation process.

These new systems will enable our crews to load patients into the ambulance with the push of a button, increasing the level of safety not just for our patients receiving care, but for our crews, who will no longer need to manually life gurneys into and out of our ambulances.

🚑 Over the past two weeks, our entire division — about 150 EMTs and paramedics — completed hands-on training with support from Stryker.

✨ Here’s what’s new:

Power-LOAD installations are nearly complete, improving safety for both crews and patients.

The LifePak 35 monitor/defibrillator is being carefully rolled out—an incredible piece of equipment that will elevate patient care.

Training on the UE video laryngoscope is complete, and this cutting-edge tool will officially get launched at the end of the month to assist with difficult airways and enhance patient outcomes.

We’re proud of the teamwork it took to make this happen and excited to see the difference these advancements will bring to both our crews and our community.

Looking sharp! Welcome and congratulations to our latest new-hires! Our newest EMTs just finished up our 2-week orientation process — complete with courses on compliance, policies and legalities, as well as training on our Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) assist training!

Now, they'll be paired up with a field training officer (FTO) to continue the remainder of their training before taking on full-time 9-1-1 shifts.

They are working to be ready to support our community members in their time of need!

So, who manages all of this new equipment training? With new LIFEPAK cardiac monitors, PowerLoad systems, radios, defibrillators, IPad Mobile Data terminals, Starlink satellite receivers, laryngoscopes and radios — AMR Santa Barbara County is working diligently to implement new equipment and provide robust training to crews.

To accomplish this, AMR’s Brad Moore will be transitioning into a new role as a CES specialist, supporting Helen Faithfull, AMR’s Clinical Manager, in all clinical education specialty-related needs. The CES division does everything from new-hire training to ensuring paperwork and processes are in compliance with the County and State. With respect to our new equipment, Helen and Brad will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing training for all staff, supporting AMR in providing improved health care to our County’s residents — contributing to better health care outcomes.

New Equipment Highlight — UESCOPE Video Laryngoscope

In critical cases, when our crews respond to a patient who is experiencing unconsciousness, there are times when advanced airway intubations are needed to help establish a definitive airway. Field intubations can be quite challenging, and this laryngoscope is designed to support paramedics with a greater chance of first-success attempts for airway intubation. Additionally, it reduces the time of intubation application minimizes patient distress.

Simply put, these new laryngoscopes will support paramedics in improving patient care and experience during difficult intubations.
