From the Buellton California Highway Patrol
Holding a phone while driving is a major safety risk. You need both hands on the wheel and your full attention on the road.

California law requires:

📵 No holding or operating a handheld phone while driving (since 2017) (23123 VC)
🔊 Drivers 18+ may only use hands-free devices
🔞 Drivers under 18: no phone use at all (23124 VC)
💬 No texting, reading, or sending messages — even at red lights (23123.5 VC)
📌 You may briefly swipe/tap only if the phone is mounted

Mount your phone so it doesn’t block your view or interfere with airbags.
Distracted driving kills. Put the phone down and drive focused.

DUI checkpoint follow-up......

On Friday, July 17, the Buellton Area CHP operated a DUI checkpoint with our allied agency partners from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office (SBSO) and California State Parks (CSP). The statistics for the operation were as follows:

- 618 vehicles were screened.
- 16 individuals were administered field sobriety tests.
- 1 person was arrested for DUI.
- 2 citations were issued to unlicensed drivers.

Thank you to SBSO and CSP for coming out and being part of our California Office of Traffic Safety funded DUI checkpoint. Thank you to the public for their cooperation and assisting us in our mission to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security to our community.

Today, Chief Foster, co-workers, and some classmates from CTC II-02 had the honor of wishing Sergeant McKenna farewell as he heads into retirement after 24+ years of service with the CHP! BUELLTON CHP TO CONDUCT SOBRIETY/DRIVER LICENSE CHECKPOINT

The Buellton Area of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will conduct a sobriety/driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, July 17, 2026, within an unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County in the Buellton CHP jurisdictional area.

NOTE: The sobriety/driver license checkpoint will be operated from 6:00 pm to 12:00 am. The
media may contact the San Luis Obispo CHP dispatch at (805) 593-3333 on July 17, 2026, between 4:00-6:00 p.m. for the exact checkpoint location.

Questions regarding the sobriety checkpoint may be directed to Buellton Area CHP Public Information Officer C. Dowling or Sergeant J. Boyd, at (805) 691-6160. Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

E-bikes are a great way to travel but safety starts with knowing the rules.

The California Highway Patrol reminds riders:

🪖 Riders under 18 must wear a helmet on any bicycle or e-bike.
🪖 Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16 years old, and all riders must wear a helmet.
🚦 E-bike riders have the same rights and responsibilities as bicyclists and must follow the California Vehicle Code.
🏷️ Make sure your e-bike has a manufacturer-issued Class 1, 2, or 3 label.
⚠️ As of January 1, 2026, eMotos are not considered e-bikes and are subject to different laws.

Ride responsibly, wear your helmet, and do your part to keep California’s roadways safe.

🚲 Know Your E-Bike Classes – California Style!

An electric bicycle (e-bike) is a bike with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts.
California recognizes three e-bike classes. Understanding them helps keep everyone safe on the roads and trails:

✅ Class 1 – Low-speed pedal-assisted
Motor assists only when you’re pedaling and stops helping at 20 mph.
✅ Class 2 – Low-speed throttle-assisted
Motor can propel the bike without pedaling and stops at 20 mph.
✅ Class 3 – Speed pedal-assisted
Motor assists only when pedaling, stops at 28 mph, and must have a speedometer.

⚠️ Important:
• Tampering with or modifying an e-bike to change its class is illegal in California.
• Out-of-class modifications can void warranties, increase injury risk, and lead to citations.
Ride smart, ride safe, and know the rules! Always wear a helmet and follow all traffic laws.
