A comment posted by a member of the public on any Buena Park Police Department social media site is the opinion of the commentator or poster only, and publication of a comment does not imply endorsement of, or agreement by, the Buena Park Police Department, nor do such comments necessarily reflect the opinions or policies of the Buena Park Police Department.

Buena Park Police is always looking for better ways to serve our community.

We’re researching automated non-emergency call handling to replace our current phone tree.

This would apply only to non-emergency calls.

911 emergencies will still be answered by our highly skilled police dispatchers. That will not change. This technology is intended to support our dispatchers, not replace them.

The goal is simple: no hold times when several people call at once, faster service for routine requests, and immediate language assistance when someone needs help in another language.

That also lets dispatchers give their full attention to 911 emergency callers and officers who need them most.

We’re still in the research phase and will share more as we learn. Stay tuned.

Buena Park, Calif. - On Friday, August 21st, the Buena Park Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 7:00 P.M. to 2:00 A.M at an undisclosed location.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant B. Johnson said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The Buena Park Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol.

Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

School is back in session! With the new school year starting up, we wanted to introduce you to our Buena Park Police Department School Resource Officers! 👮‍♂️📚

Today we remember Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Shayne Daniel York.

On August 14, 1997, at approximately 9:00 p.m., two unarmed Off-Duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies, Shayne York and his fiancée, were at the De’Cut Hair Salon in Buena Park. The two deputies were engaged and had gone to the beauty salon in preparation for a weekend getaway they had planned. Two armed suspects entered the hair salon, and proceeded to rob the salon and its patrons.

Along with the others, Deputy York was ordered to lie facedown on the floor. The suspects went through Deputy York’s wallet and discovered his Sheriff’s badge. Once they found out York was a Deputy Sheriff, one of the gunmen shot him in the back of the head, and the two suspects then fled the scene.

On August 16, 1997 at approximately 4:30 p.m., Shayne D. York was taken off of life support and he passed away at approximately 8:30 p.m

Later that same evening, a Fullerton Police officer made a traffic stop on a vehicle. Subsequent investigation revealed that the two occupants of the vehicle were possibly involved in the crime. Both suspects were arrested without incident and taken to the Buena Park Police Department for booking.

Both suspects were subsequently arrested and brought to trial for the murder of Deputy York.

Deputy York is remembered as one of our fallen officers and is honored every year by the Buena Park Police Department on the anniversary of his passing.

Before the summer season winds down, the Buena Park Police Department wants everyone to kick off their Labor Day festivities with safety at the forefront. Make the decision that saves lives. Choose safety every time you get behind the wheel and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

To help keep our community safe, the Buena Park Police Department will have additional officers on patrol Aug. 19 through Labor Day (Sept. 7) looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The additional efforts to prevent impaired driving are part of a national enforcement campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

In addition to patrols, the Buena Park Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint on August 21 and September 4th from 8:00 P.M to 2:00 A.M at an undisclosed location within the city of Buena Park.

“Enjoying the last days of summer should be all about fun, and that starts with making safe choices before making plans,” Sgt. B. Johnson said. “Everyone deserves to get home safely, and it starts with your everyday actions.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,904 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in the U.S. in 2024 — that’s one person every 44 minutes.

Today, we remember Detective Daniel Ackerman, who on July 29, 2011, suffered a medical emergency while running the physical fitness qualification for our SWAT team. Our team medic, an ER physician and volunteer with our department was there and immediately began rendering aid. Detective Ackerman was rushed to a nearby hospital.

On the following morning of July 30, 2011, Detective Ackerman passed away.

Today, we honor him and the loved ones he left behind.

On July 9, 2026, we proudly celebrated the graduation of Officer Lucaci, Officer Tubbs, and Officer Campos from the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy. The ceremony marked the culmination of months of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. During the graduation, Officer Lucaci had the honor of serving as Class #270 Honorary Class Sergeant, while Officer Tubbs was recognized with the Practical Applications Award for his outstanding performance.

Yesterday, July 29, Chief Geyer officially swore in Officer Lucaci, Officer Tubbs, Officer Campos, and Officer Cho as the newest members of the Buena Park Police Department. We are excited to welcome them to the team as they begin the next chapter of their law enforcement careers in service to the Buena Park community.

During the ceremony, we also recognized Dispatcher James Brandsetter on his well-earned promotion to Lead Dispatcher. James’ professionalism, leadership, and dedication to our department have made a lasting impact, and we look forward to seeing him excel in his new role.

Last night, one of our graveyard officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop. During his investigation, the driver was found to be out on bail for an unrelated narcotics sales case. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of methamphetamine, a methamphetamine pipe, and a loaded 9mm handgun.

The driver was ultimately arrested for narcotics and fi****ms-related charges.

Proactive enforcement continues to play a vital role in removing illegal fi****ms and dangerous narcotics from our community and keeping our streets safe!

The Buena Park Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a critical missing person.

P**c Vu was last seen at approximately 10:09 a.m. today leaving the Walmart Garden Center, located near La Palma Avenue and Dale Street. He is diagnosed with Austism. P**c has short black hair, brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a dark blue short-sleeve polo shirt, gray sweatpants, and black shoes.

Officers are actively searching the area, checking nearby businesses, shopping centers, and surrounding neighborhoods.
