Last week, Vernon Township Supervisor Tim Kobler and Trustee Phil Hirsh joined the Healthy Kids Running Series Buffalo Grove, IL (HKRS) for its “Give Back Week.” This event highlighted the Township Food Pantry and encouraged runners and their families to donate food to help keep the shelves stocked. HKRS is a national, community-based nonprofit that provides an inclusive five-week running program for children ages 2–14, that promotes physical activity, confidence building and lifelong healthy habits. The Township sincerely thanks HKRS and its participants for their continued support of local families in need who rely on the Food Pantry each month.

Vernon Township will be closed today, Monday, October 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Township offices will reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday, October 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Early voting for the November 3 General Election begins Monday, October 19 and runs through Saturday, October 31, at William E. Peterson Park, 16652 N. Buffalo Grove Road in Vernon Hills. Voting will be available Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lake County residents can vote at any designated early voting site in the county. The Benefit Access Program (BAP) helps income-eligible Illinois seniors ages 65 and older, and people with disabilities ages 16+ save on transportation costs. Eligible participants can receive a discount on their license plate renewal sticker and a Ride Free NITA (Northern Illinois Transit Authority) Card (formerly named the RTA Card). The program is a partnership between the Illinois Department on Aging, the Illinois Secretary of State, and NITA. Eligibility is valid for two years from the date an application is approved. Thank you to everyone who supported the Vernon Township Community Blood Drive earlier this month! Whether you rolled up your sleeve to donate, volunteered your time, or helped organize the event - your generosity made a difference. The drive welcomed 31 donors - including eight first-time donors. Two staff members also donated: Vernon Township Parks & Recreation Program Supervisor Chris DePalma and Special Projects Coordinator Lauren Didech. Save the date for our next Community Blood Drive on Thursday, November 19. More details will be announced as the date approaches.

Make the holiday season a little brighter for our neighbors in need. Registration is open for Vernon Township’s 2026 holiday giving programs. Join us by sponsoring the Thanksgiving Basket or Winter Holiday Basket programs - or both! Thanksgiving Basket sponsors donate all the fixings for a Thanksgiving meal for a family in need, and sponsors of the Winter Holiday Basket are anonymously matched with neighbors and receive their holiday gift wish lists. You can also choose to donate a holiday meal along with gifts. Illinois Rail Safety Week runs Monday, September 21, through Sunday, September 27, and highlights the importance of staying safe around railroad tracks and crossings - including around our own Prairie View Metra Station. This annual initiative has helped to reduce train and motor vehicle collisions from a high of roughly 12,000 incidents in 1972 to approximately 2,226 in 2025. As part of this annual observance, Metra will host safety blitzes at several suburban train stations to share important information and precautions.
