As June brings longer days, warmer temperatures and a full calendar of outdoor events, it can also bring challenges for many individuals. Shifts in routine, increased social activity, travel and rising heat can sometimes contribute to stress, fatigue or feelings of being overwhelmed. The Vernon Township Community Mental Health Board encourages residents to take time to check in with themselves and others during this busy season: stay hydrated, take breaks from the heat, maintain healthy routines and rest when needed. If you or someone you know is seeking support, resources are available to help you stay balanced and well throughout the summer months. Visit vtcmhb.org.

Tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease can affect physical and mental health. Research has shown individuals diagnosed with Lyme disease face a higher risk of depression, anxiety and other mood disorders. The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center recently reported that tick-related emergency department visit rates are nearly double the typical rate for this time of year - which makes prevention especially important as more people spend time outdoors. Residents are encouraged to use tick repellent, wear protective clothing and check for ticks after outdoor activities. Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, and a yearly observance that honors and remembers those who gave their lives in service to our country. This day can be especially difficult for veterans and their families, particularly those living with PTSD, depression or anxiety. Mental health professionals encourage thoughtful language about this day: instead of saying “Happy Memorial Day,” consider saying, “Thank you for your service." Small shifts in awareness help to ensure compassion and respect for veterans. If you or someone you know is struggling with PTSD, depression or anxiety, help is available. Visit vtcmhb.org for a list of agencies that provide mental health support.
