Up next on is Operations Supervisor, Mike Zekas!

Mike Zekas is a seasoned emergency services professional with decades of experience in hazardous materials response, firefighting, and emergency medical services. Currently serving as the Hazmat Chief for Erie County, Mike oversees complex operations and ensures the safety of both first responders and the community during hazardous materials incidents. He also serves as a dedicated firefighter and EMT with the Clarence Fire Department.

In addition to his frontline roles, Mike plays a key leadership position as the Training Services Coordinator and Operations Supervisor for the Excelsior Companies, where he helps train and guide the next generation of emergency responders while overseeing critical operations.

A certified Hazmat Tech and CLI, Mike is deeply committed to advancing safety protocols and operational efficiency in all areas of his work. He is a standout employee, bringing vast knowledge and hands-on expertise to every project and team he is a part of.

Outside of work, Mike is a devoted family man and proud "Malinois dad." He enjoys spending quality time with his family, his dogs, and indulging in his passion for camping. His dedication to both his profession and his personal life makes him an invaluable asset to the emergency services community and a well-rounded individual.

On our third installment of , we have our Associate Director, Andrew Wargo, NRP!

Andrew's journey in emergency services began in 2016, and since then, he has excelled at every level of certification, ultimately achieving national certification as a paramedic. With experience spanning multiple agencies, in the city of Buffalo, New York, and its surrounding regions, Andrew has encountered a diverse array of challenges in both urban and rural pre-hospital emergency medicine.

His commitment to excellence extends beyond patient care; since early 2019, Andrew has served as an instructor with Excelsior EMS, specializing in teaching the Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) series of classes, demonstrating his dedication to sharing knowledge and fostering the growth of future EMS professionals.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Andrew finds joy in various activities. He is an avid traveler, always seeking new adventures and experiences. When not exploring new destinations, Andrew enjoys spending quality time with friends. Additionally, his love for aviation is evident in his passion for spending time in his flight simulator.

Andrew's commitment to excellence and compassionate patient care has been recognized through numerous awards, including the UBMD Award for Exceptional Patient Care, Twin District Volunteer Fire Company Firefighter of the Year, Twin District Volunteer Fire Company President's Award. These accolades are a testament to Andrew's unwavering dedication and outstanding contributions to the field of emergency services.

Up next is Jeffrey Zgoda, NRP, CIC! Jeff is the Chief Compliance Officer for Excelsior Management!

With a career spanning over a decade, Jeff's journey in EMS began in 2012 in the Western New York area. Starting as an EMT-B, Jeff's unwavering commitment to excellence propelled him to advance his skills, eventually earning certification as a Paramedic.

Throughout his career, Jeff has served in various capacities across multiple agencies, gaining invaluable experience in diverse fields within EMS. Currently, Jeff serves as the Chief Compliance Officer, a lead instructor, and NAEMT Affiliate Faculty for Excelsior EMS, where he shares his expertise and passion for EMS education with aspiring professionals. His role as a paramedic instructor, which he has held since 2018, underscores his dedication to shaping the next generation of EMS providers.

In addition to his instructional roles, Jeff is deeply involved in his local community as a volunteer firefighter, holding the esteemed position of chief of department. His exemplary service was recognized in 2018 when he was honored with the Twin District Volunteer Fire Company Firefighter of the Year Award, a testament to his outstanding contributions and leadership within the fire service. Furthermore, Jeff's commitment to EMS education extends to his professional role as the Training and Education Administrator for Twin City Ambulance, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping training programs and ensuring the highest standards of care.

Jeff's dedication to patient care has not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by his receipt of the UBMD Award for Exceptional Patient Care in 2024. This prestigious accolade recognizes his exceptional skills, compassion, and commitment to providing the highest quality of care to those in need. Moreover, Jeff's lifesaving efforts have earned him the Catholic Health Lifesaver Award, further highlighting his remarkable contributions to the field of emergency medical services.

Outside of his professional commitments, Jeff finds joy and relaxation in spending time with his beloved dog, Ember, and cherishing moments with his family. A survey conducted by St John Ambulance's revealed that 40% of parents have witnessed their own baby choke, yet over 80% of these parents had no idea how to respond.

Would YOU know what to do if a baby starts choking?

1️⃣ Call 911.
2️⃣ Give five back blows: Hold the baby face-down along your thigh, head lower than their bottom, and hit firmly between the shoulder blades up to five times.
3️⃣ If unconscious, give five chest compressions: Turn the baby face up, place two fingers below the ni***es, and push down firmly five times.
4️⃣ Repeat until help arrives or the object is dislodged.

On our second edition of , is our incredible Medical Director, Andrew R. Poreda M.D. FACEP, FAAEM!!

Dr. Poreda is a distinguished figure in the realm of prehospital care with over two decades of dedicated service. His journey began in the volunteer fire service and as a professional EMT, where he honed his skills and cultivated a deep-rooted passion for emergency medicine.

Certified in various technical rescue disciplines, including Swift Water, Ice, Confined Space, and High Angle Rope Rescue, Dr. Poreda possesses a diverse skill set that complements his extensive medical expertise.

Having completed medical school at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, NY, Dr. Poreda embarked on his residency in Emergency Medicine, also at Syracuse. During this time, he contributed significantly to the field by authoring a textbook chapter focused on Firefighter Health and Safety, showcasing his commitment to advancing the well-being of emergency responders.

Post-residency, Dr. Poreda embarked on a journey across numerous emergency rooms in the Western New York (WNY) region, where his clinical acumen and dedication to patient care earned him a reputation as a trusted and skilled physician.

In 2020, driven by a desire for continued learning and professional growth, Dr. Poreda returned to school to complete an EMS fellowship, further solidifying his expertise in prehospital care.

Despite his demanding professional commitments, Dr. Poreda remains actively engaged with the volunteer fire service, a testament to his unwavering dedication to both his community and the field of emergency medicine.

In his leisure time, Dr. Poreda finds solace in the company of his family and dedicates himself to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular workouts.

Dr. Poreda's illustrious career is characterized by a relentless pursuit of excellence, a commitment to patient-centered care, and a steadfast dedication to the well-being of his community.
