Peace Officers Memorial Day is an observance in the United States that pays tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. It is celebrated May 15th of each year. Their task was to keep the peace by peaceful means. This duty would eventually lead to the police also being referred to as "peace" officers, a designation that survives today and is actually a defined term in New York State law.

This Spring, the Erie County Youth Bureau has facilitated a collaboration between Junior Achievement of WNY, Erie County Probation, and the UB EOC to develop the pilot cohort of the Career Exploration Program. This program brings together professionals and cross-sector collaboration to introduce teens to a range of accessible career pathways through hands-on experience. This week, our staff joined the group for a visit to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, and it was inspiring!

The group met with Delta Airline professionals who shared insight into their roles from customer service to baggage operations. The participants learned about the skills, teamwork, and coordination required to keep operations running smoothly. They even had the rare opportunity to walk the tarmac and observe a Delta airplane arrival and luggage unloading up close. Experiences like this make a lasting impression and open real pathways to education and careers which enable youth to realize their potential and build capacity. We have been proud to be the catalyst to this great program and look forward to future cohorts!
