We did a thing-we gathered! And we talked books, movies, stories, and about life. It was a joy to see everyone. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon!

It was such a treat to have Chuck Marohn, the Founder and President of Strong Towns, present his “Local Leader’s Toolkit” today at TGCC’s July meeting of the 2020 Zoom Speaker Series. Chuck, the author of “Strong Towns - A Bottom up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity,” shared strategies and next steps for how we as local leaders can help move the needle in our communities to make our towns stronger and more resilient. This presentation was incredibly timely, particularly for the members of our I-68 Regional Alliance who are on the front lines of economic recovery in this incredibly challenging time.

It was also wonderful to have members of the inaugural Appalachian Leadership Institute as our guests. I hope to see all of you again soon!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Cheryl DeBerry, Natural Resources Business Specialist with Garrett County Economic Development, and Mike Koch, owner of FireFly Farms during our Energy & Natural Resources Committee Meeting. Both shared the incredible impacts felt within the agribusiness sector as a result of COVID. As Ms. DeBerry shared, “working together has become essential for us to survive as an industry.” This sentiment captures the heart of TGCC’s philosophy that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and that we must truly work together if we are to achieve a robust regional economy.

It was wonderful to be joined today by our regional college presidents and public school officials to discuss Education in the Region: Fall 2020 Plans Amidst a Global Pandemic. We heard about challenges and opportunities around instructional delivery and scheduling, campus safety, athletics, residence halls, and more. We were joined by our Committee Chair, Dr. Cynthia Bambara, President, Allegany College of Maryland; Dr. Richard Midcap, President, Garrett College; Dr. Jennifer Orlikoff, President, WVU Potomac State College; Dr. Ron Nowaczyk, President, Frostburg State University; Karen DeVore, Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Administration, Garrett County Public Schools; and Dr. Kimberly Green Kalbaugh, Chief Academic Officer, Allegany County Public Schools. It is heartening to see how each of these institutions, vital aspects of our community, have come together to weather this pandemic.
