I am so grateful to our Purple Heart veterans for their enormous sacrifices and commitment to our country. This annual celebration of these veterans, put on by Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns, is always a wonderful tribute to these American heroes.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Dennis Crawley Jr after a hard fought battle with ALS. I was honored to recognize him as Coach of the Year in November, 2022. Dennis exemplified courage and strength. He was an inspiration not only to all those he coached, but to the Western New York community. He leaves a legacy that won’t be forgotten. My prayers go out to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he impacted.

Crawley was inducted into the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022.

What happened today is absolutely unacceptable. As Americans, we need to come together and let democracy reign, and put a stop those who seek to usurp the process. Now is a time to mourn those who were injured or killed expressing their beliefs, and vow to together hold American values dear. My thoughts and prayers are with Donald Trump and all of those injured or killed at today's celebration.

I'm glad the Buffalo News agrees. As they wrote, "Erie County Democrats, apparently eager to prove the maxim that power corrupts, turned a valuable project to support small and medium sized cultural organizations into a kind of legalized slush fund." ..."Shame on the Legislature's Democratic majority." The Buffalo News is right in their assessment that lawmakers on the other side of the aisle played political games with this funding, and in turn deprived intended recipients of the funding. This was wrong, and the seven legislators who quietly and secretly did this last minute should be held accountable.

The $25 million fund was meant to support small- and medium-sized arts and cultural organizations in need of one-time renovation, repair and construction costs. It was supposed to last years.

Erie County’s Chief Public Defender needs to step down after sending an email to attorneys in the Assigned Counsel program strongly suggesting they donate politically to the Erie County Dem Chairman. That program is a 501c3 and should be free of any politics.

I’m sorry to say that Erie County residents lost today. My colleagues on the other side of the aisle approved a measure that would take away the public’s input regarding sales tax. This measure silences the voices of voters in 33 municipalities in Erie County.

Proud dad moment.....my son, Giovanni recently took the hunter safety course at Hawkeye Bowmen Archery Club in Marilla, a town I'm proud to represent. He told me he wanted to have a meeting with the County Executive and voice his displeasure that he cannot hunt under dad's supervision in the county where he lives. It's unfortunate and wrong.

I also was happy to attend Giovanni's St. Mary's Elementary School sports banquet recently.

Voter ID would be better! You still have to carry your driver’s license or ID anyway, so what’s the point? This seems to be a waste of taxpayer dollars.

I was honored to participate in Marilla’s 150th annual Memorial Day parade. A moving ceremony was held at Marilla Marilla Cemetery. We then proceeded to Maplewood Cemetery and concluded at the Marilla Veterans Memorial. Never forget those who sacrificed all.

The outcome from negotiations with sales tax extension has been a benefit to all county residents; a property tax levy decrease, savings on home heating costs in winter, less borrowing. The County Executive doesn’t want to negotiate with us any longer. He’s pushing a law that would take away the voice of the people on sales tax. For someone who supposedly advocates for increased voter rights, he wants to take away some of yours. It’s irresponsible and it’s wrong.

When our caucus has been able to negotiate with the County Executive over the sales tax, it has resulted in millions of dollars in savings for taxpayers. He has even boasted about those successes in interviews and speeches. Those savings were the result of the Republican caucus requests. Mark Poloncarz even admits in an interview with the paper that he essentially wants to silence the voice of the people by pushing this Local Law that would do away with a public referendum with the sales tax. The Legislature should not exist to be a rubber stamp for the County Executive, but that’s exactly what this proposed local law does; a law they are trying to quickly rush through. It’s shameful. It’s unAmerican and it’s wrong.

Republican and Democratic county leaders have stepped up the battle over a proposed local law that would make it easier to extend the 8.75% sales tax that consumers are charged on everything from clothing to cars.

05/17/2024

A Local Law being pushed by the other side of the aisle silences the voices of hundreds of thousands of Erie County residents. They don’t want you to have a say when it comes to the sales tax. They even want to do away with a referendum where the public could decide on extending, or even increasing the sales tax. They’re rushing this through with the hope no one notices. Let them know how your opposition.
