Today, a great milestone was reached: the City of Buffalo's Office of Gun Violence and Prevention secured its first financial investment, thanks to Senator Jeremy Zellner, who secured $50,000 in the state budget.

It is no secret that I am deeply invested in the success of this office. When I became Councilwoman, the very first piece of legislation I introduced to the Buffalo Common Council was to create the Office of Gun Violence and Prevention. This office is proof that Buffalo cares about preventing gun violence, not just responding to the aftermath. We must continue to create spaces for young people, raise youth voices, invest in families, address root causes of gun violence, invest in trauma informed care, and provide programs that make an impact. This funding from Senator Zellner will be put to great use, and I cannot thank him enough for believing in this Office.

We have some amazing news for all those with homeownership aspirations. The City of Buffalo is currently undergoing a HUGE infill project across the City. Dozens of homes are being built by the City and County, and will soon be available to purchase. Join me tomorrow evening from 5- 8 p.m. at Northland Workforce Training Center for our free WNY Home Buyer’s Seminar.

We want to build up our neighborhood with families. People who live in these areas but are paying high rent, now is your time to get prepared to purchase a home.

Happy Juneteenth, family! Thank you to our elders and the Juneteenth Festival Board for keeping this legendary celebration going for 50 years.

Juneteenth is a time to remember and honor the giants whose shoulders we stand on – the activists and freedom fighters who marched, fought, and died to advance the promise of freedom and justice to Black people. It’s a time to celebrate how far we have come, and recognize the work left ahead of us to ensure equity and liberty for Black Americans. And it’s a time to celebrate our survival, our achievements, and our contributions to this city and to this country.

And most of all, it’s a time to celebrate Our Freedom!

I’m proud to raise the Red, Green, and Black Flag at City Hall to pay tribute to this rich legacy. And this weekend, it’ll be my pleasure to march and celebrate with our community for Freedom Day! πŸ’šπŸ–€β™₯️

The Masten’s Rooted in the Park Farmers Market will be held every Saturday, 9AM-1PM, now through September 26, here at the John E Brent Garden beside the Buffalo Museum of Science. (Excluding June 13 & July 4 for holiday celebrations).

Thank you so much to Rooted In Love, Inc. and all our amazing vendors who partnered with my office to put this on. This market has some amazing products and produce, and I can’t wait to see it continue to grow and flourish.

Today, we wear orange for every parent mourning a child lost to gun violence. We wear orange for every gun violence survivor left struggling with injuries and PTSD. We wear orange for our youth - to teach them to reject the cycle of violence and instead choose a better path toward a peaceful and prosperous life.

National Gun Violence Awareness Month, observed every June, is about much more than a color or slogan. It’s about proclaiming our commitment to saving lives and creating safer streets. It’s about offering our support and compassion to those impacted. And it’s about engaging everyone in our community to do our part to prevent violence.

Thank you to Adrienne Garr at the City of Buffalo Office of Gun Violence Prevention , to Buffalo SNUG, to the Buffalo Police Department, and to all our community groups that are working toward a safer Buffalo.

This is a challenging time of the year for those engaged in public safety. But I believe that by working collaboratively, purposefully, and with best practices, we can continue our forward progress in creating safer streets throughout our city.
